How common is it for collectors to have a personal stash of currency or precious metals as a buffer

I know that many current seniors who lived through the depression have currency and PM's stashed away at home or else outside of a bank "Just In Case".
How about collectors? Is this common, regardless of age, or is it something collectors have not given much thought to?

To keep it close to US Coin Forum appropriate, I will say some of my tiny stash is US silver and gold coins, pre 1965. Good enough to keep me from being taken to the woodshed?
