If your coin club could host an educational seminar, what topics and speakers would you like to have

Say your local club had the opportunity to host an educational seminar and you could pick any two topics with any two speakers; who would you pick and why? Also, would you go for the more general interest with, say, a "grading seminar" or go for a specialty even though the general interest may not be as great?

  • I'd go for something all the members could relate to.
    Grading would work.
Coin photography, different methods of selling coins, estate planning,.......
    lots of topics would fit.
Specific series subjects would be a turnoff for a lot of the members.

Hard to pick just one but if I had to decide three, it'd be counterfeit detection, grading, and maybe photography.

As for speakers, anyone from PCGS or NGC might do.

Laura S. talking about market trends on classic coins or some representatives of the BHNC talking about anything they want to talk about.

The educational seminars and meeting presentations should always be about subjects that have broad appeal to the attending members and cover topics that collectors universally care about. The presenters should also people who bear some level of charisma and are comfortable talking in front of a crowd. Give a presentation on subjects such as grading, market trends, coin conservation and the business of numismatics and you will probably find most attendees listening dilligently. Have somebody give a ranting lecture about an obscure subject such as Central American cobs or modern coins from the South Pacific and people will find excuses to go outside for a smoke break or leave early altogether.

I'd want Pistareen, and any subject he wanted to talk about would be fine with me. image

Since most collectors enjoy the history surrounding the coins, maybe something about the Panic of 1892 or other historical event that had a connection to US coinage.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

That's from firsthand experience from one of my local coin clubs. You wouldn't believe how many people go on an extended smoke break...even the folks who don't smoke... when this elder club member gives one of his presentations.

Grading coins, how the markets work, or the history of numismatics would be great topics.

Anybody who has a comprehensive and accurate understanding of current grading standards and procedures who is mildly entertaining and charismatic when giving talks in front of crowds.
