Grading Question

I'm about to submit a bunch of vintage cards for grading. Would you ship them using priority mail? and if so, it says not to use clear packing tape but the priority boxes won't do brown packing tape. Also, can I write the type of submission on a regular priority box?
Thanks

  • It's registered mail for me only.

Registered is the safest and cheapest to insure. Priority mail is fine, though. Also, the clear slick packing tape is a post office requirement on registered mail only. With registered mail, the post office rubber stamps all edges and seams. The ink would smear on clear slick packing tape.

    I prefer Prority, Insured, w/DC/SC.

The pack and tape job on Registered is too much work for me, and the service is often SLOW.

  • We send ours US Priority Registered Insured. Our packages have always made it there in 2-3 business days.

Our post office gives us a whole roll of the brown tape for free whenever we ask.

Like Storm, I think it's a lot of work too, but that's why I have my sons do the packaging.

We always abbreviate the name of the sub type when writing it on the outside of the box, ie. Sept CC Spec.

    Good luck,

The lady at the post office helped me. She gave me a box, packed it up, and taped it with brown packing tape for free. It cost me $28 for registered mail with $2000 insurance to ship 36 cards for grading. The good news is that it only cost me $180 + $57 return shipping to have them graded using my 6 free vouchers and the rest on set registry for my '61 set.
  • I always use priority and just use del. confirmation. I only did the insurance once. I just sent 22 cards out this morning w/ del. confirmation for $5.65. Never had a problem. My return cost was $25.50 for 22 items w/ a value between $501-1000. Heck, that's enough to pay already!!!!!!!
  • and yes, you can write Set Registry Special or whatever all over the box. I usually write it in 3 or 4 different places. I always use the clear tape on the priority box as well. You can order boxes that are 7x7x6 free from USPS.com and they're great for shipping cards. By the way, how many of the '60 baseball did you send out for grading???

I sent all 9 of the '60 Topps and 27 '61 Topps including Mays, Mantle AS, Aaron, Banks, Banks AS, Aparicio AS, Mantle Blasts Homerun, Cepeda, Ford AS and some NRMINT commons (a few high numbers). I may send a lot more of the ungraded from my set because I just went through all of the graded ones I have and put them in the set registry and the 7's and 8's don't look as nice as any of the ones I just sent and a lot more of the ones I have.
  • Be sure and post the results when you get them. It's always nice for everyone to see the cards "raw" and then see what grade they end up getting. Good luck!

thanks. This is my first time sending in cards for grading so it will be interesting. I had planned on busting up the '61 set I just bought, but now that I've got the bug again I think I'm gonna finish a fully graded set if my wallet can take it.
