The Simpsons and Coin Collecting

Saw the last few minutes of The Simpsons tonight.
Bart got back a 1917 "Kissing Lincolns" penny, put it in a book, and said "Now let's put it on the shelf and never look at it again".

Does that fit YOUR collecting? Not talking about the kissing Lincolns part...I really don't want to hear if that is you in your collecting image Talking about putting coins in books (or slabs) and putting them away....not to look at them again for a long long time?

Not me....I frequently go to the SDB or grab the Danscos and look at the coins. Just got out the "barely started' Merc Dansco yesterday. Hadn't looked at it in about 2 months, pulled it out and looked at them. Only about 8 coins in there, but we like the ones that are in there....this one is all BU.

I do have my grandmother's merc set (minus the keys and early dates) and some of those toned over the years.....she worked on mercs for a couple decades...found them in the till back when she was worked in a convenience type store in Spokane, Wa. She moved to Nevada back in the 1980s and so the coins were in different climates...not sure when they started to tone....it was weird seeing well circulated silver toning neat colors, and knowing the likelihood of anything other than climate & storage had anything to do with it (I know she wouldn't have known how to doctor any coin anyway).

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

That's the problem with a SDB. I just got one, for my consignor's coins, but I like to have mine close by for examination and the occasional fondling. I suppose if I had really high-dollar stuff I would keep them in the SDB and just admire pictures of them, though.

Rob, I look at it this way....if someone robbed my house, or a fire broke out, or, for those that suffered last year and this is hurricanes, if flooding occured, what would I be very hard pressed to replace? Either financially, look, or otherwise?

In my case, I even have proof sets in there (1999, 2001, etc) as well as some $50-$100 coins that I like the look of. Individually, I could replace many of them, combined, I wouldn't want to try it financially (I have a few rolls of SAEs, some Australian Lunar Series I gold ounces, etc).

At home, I literally have pocket change and some low priced danscos. Someone would be committing felonies for very low profit potential that way.

I wouldn't be going to all the coin shows I do, and breaking my back looking through so many cases if I didn't like to look at coins all the time.
And I love all the photos here as well.

A large portion of my collection has not seen light for quite some time (probably since I bought the safe).

There are some that I like to look at often. For example, my icon is a Binion dollar that I just love the toning on. It really depends on what portion of my collection I am working for which ones get to see light.

Having photos of coins has really helped me enjoy the coins more.

I have high quality color printouts of my coins. I look at those fairly often. The coins themselves - only a few times a year.
