Yankee fans, here's to you tonight . . .

I was there when they threw the final pitch at Tiger Stadium in 1999. Walking out of that stadium for the last time was a hard feeling to explain. You knew there were much more important things in life, but it was really tough. Way too many good memories with my dad and brother to not feel really sad.

So enjoy tonight, remember the good times and the memories. Strangely enough, it's a sad night for me. I'm regretting never getting to Yankee Stadium, but even though I've never been there, I'm going to miss it. It seemed to come alive on TV for whatever reason, all the way from the mid 1970s up until 2006 when the Tigers upset the Yankees in the ALDS, it's certainly been magical watching broadcasts from Yankee Stadium.

cheers Yankee fans. End of an era.... wonder what the new stadium will bring?
  • That goodbye piece with Yogi Berra in it after the game was really well done.

And now the question becomes: When can we close up Ford Field?

Last night wasn't about what team is your favorite, it was a journey through time.

    Larson's WS perfect game, Yogi's 10 rings, Munson's gritty approach, 61 in 61, Mr October's 3 hr's in a WS, Babe's first HR, etc...

I really enjoyed all of the pregame ceremonies, Yogi standing behind home plate, made the hairs on my arm stand up.

As a Sox fan, I tip my cap.

  • It was really awesome to watch. I'm glad that it was more of a celebration than anything else. It couldn't have been better. All the old Yankees came out, it was a good game that they won, Jeter's speech at the end which was totally unrehearsed made everyone feel forward looking, and the party on the field afterwards wrapped it up all nicely.

I think that morgansforever put it best...

Exactly, it was like walking through a baseball time machine. I think all fans of baseball enjoyed it.
  • I was at Detroit's 3rd to the last game at Tiger Stadium. Even walked around with a video camera accounting for all the back corridors and nooks and crannies in a semi drunken state while towing my brother and buddy with me, interviewing hot dog vendors and other workers.

Then the next year we went to the new park (Comerica) and it was all new and pretty, but we definitely missed the "feel" of the old place. In Tiger Stadium, it was all about baseball. Hungry? Get a hot dog and a beer, then sit back down.
The new place was like a shrine to amenities, accommodating children with circus rides, lounges with carpet and Lazy-Boys for bored business people, and fancy food for all the SUV driving suburbanites.

Jeter's comments about "transferring the old memories" or whatever will ring hollow once you're sitting in what will feel like a brand new brightly lit generic hotel with a view of a baseball game. You won't be thinking about baseball's golden age when you're at this billion dollar ballpark!

Hate to see the old places go, but we live in a fancy age and we require fancy things, we cannot be subjected to deal with architecture from the Calvin Coolidge administration!
