New to PSA Grading

Hi all, first post here, just joined the PSA CC and had some questions that I am pretty sure you can answer....

#1) I've looked in the forums and found some of the information, but before I bother you all too much, is there a website that has more detailed things on "what to look for" when considering cards for PSA submission...

#2) I have a couple questions about what defects I have on a couple of sample cards might do to my overall grade.

The first is this 51 Red Back Gus Zernial. Along the top there seems to be a bulge but it is not seperating at the edge...what might that do to an overall grade?

image

Next is this 78 Nolan Ryan...The card appears to be in great shape but is very OC -- would it get a grade with a Q or a straight (lower) grade?

This 78 Murray looks like it was cut with a saw as opposed to a blade...how much does that ding the grade?

image

...finally this Sandberg appears to be cut at a bit of an angle...what does that do?

Thanks in advance for any help...

    Welcome bziddy!

    In order:

    1 - ? Can't see it

2 - Ryan would be OC if nicer than a 5/6

3 - No problem with rough cuts unless edges chipped up

4 - angle/tilt will likely cost you one full grade

No hard & fast rules, but based on my experience only.

  • Welcome to the boards and yes, you suck at posting pics.

The only help I can offer from the pics is regarding the Ryan. At best it would probably be a 7 if you requested no qualifiers. If the corners are sharp and has no other flaws it would be a PSA 9 OC. 80's junk is more my specialty and the Sandberg if it has a tilt has little chance at a 9, at best a 9 MC.

  • One rule to remember. Its pretty much impossible for anybody to accurately access a card from
a scan. Although many are always willing to try. My best advice: Save your money and keep them raw.

The Zernial is the most valuable card of the lot to submit. The Ryan and Sandberg cards aren't worth the cost of grading. You might be able to pull a 7 on the Murray. Welcome to the boards!

Welcome to the board. I agree with the Zernial and is the only one really worth submitting.

The Murray is borderline and don't do it to make money. If it has sentimental value, like first set or
year of collecting, then go for it.

  • I agree with everyone else. The Sandberg and Murray are at best 8's which makes them worth about the same as the raw value plus grading fees.

None of those look like 8's to me, but as been stated, it's not always easy to tell for sure from a scan. Get yourself a 10x loupe and look at the corners - If there is wear (fraying) at all four corners which is very common with cards that haven't been "played with", but have been stored in a shoebox or drawer, then usually the best they're gonna be is a 7. That's a good guideline for ya on these cards as to what grade they will get...and there are other factors involved which could bring down the grade.

I don't know of any newbie yet who submitted to PSA and the grades came back the same as the newbie expected - the grades are usually less, and sometimes much less than the newbie expected.

Thanks for all the repiles -- I wasn't planning on submitting anything but the Zernial, just wanted to get an idea of what some of the issues I saw on teh others would do to their grades (OC, MC, rough cuts, etc...)

The 78s and the 83 are actually pack fresh, so the corners are the best things about the cards.

Once again, thanks for all the replies.

    Hi bz

    Welcome!

I really like the 51T redback - I've seen where people are tempted to cut the cards from each other - this one has been careflully torn and looks great - good luck on the grading.

I agree with those that think that we would be guessing at a grade - but we can fer sure talk about centering - and unless we're talking about a high end card, OC isn't worth the price of admission - I agree on that.

    Don't be a stranger!
