Very generous members here. Thanks to Mike (VitoCo1972) - 1938 Churchman poppage - WITH SCANS

After I completed my T218 set, Mike had recommended to me that another nice set to start that wasn't too big, and was pretty affordable, would be the 1938 Churchman boxing set. Then, out of the goodness of his heart, he sent me 14 cards from the 1938 Churchman boxing set that I received today. They are wonderful Mike, and I appreciate your generosity.

The funny thing though is that the story doesn't end there. About 30 minutes after I received Mike's gift I started looking for some 1938 Churchman cards on eBay to see what they were all about, and I saw an auction that was ending in 20 minutes from the U.K. for a complete set. I quickly googled a GBP to USD converter so I could bid accordingly, and before you know it I was the winner of this auction for a complete set. The cards in that auction I won appear to be in very nice shape, and for only $79.82 USD + $7.00 USD shipping I think I did very well on that set, which I never would have even been looking for, had it not been for a very generous member of these boards. Thanks again Mike.

Nick, I can't believe they got there so fast. I had to get your address from Rube. I know you'll like the set. I bought a whole raw set on eBay and graded them all with SGC. They can be found in nicer shape because the stock is so thick, but you have a ton of boxing HOFers in there so it's a really fun one - plus it's 70 years old. Let me know how your eBay set grades out

When I hear Churchmans I always think of golf cards. For some reason boxing cards never entered my mind. That is a great set with some great names. I always wanted to pick me up a Braddock and a Dempsey of any brand and might actually have to look into doing this set myself. Its right up my alley... small and not that expensive.

Congrats of the set cant wait for the scans

I am on a budget and I am not afraid to use it!!
  • Nice looking cards.

<< <i>...........Let me know how your eBay set grades out >>

Well it's almost 9 months later, but I used the recent May special to send PSA some of the nicer stars and 2 nice commons from the 1938 Churchman Boxing set I won on eBay back in September. Honestly I thought they were mostly PSA 7ish, but I was pleasantly surprised with a few of the grades they received.

    NEAR MINT-MINT 8................1938 W.A. & A.C. CHURCHMAN BOXING PERSONALITIES...........6 JAMES J. BRADDOCK
    NEAR MINT-MINT+ 8.5...........1938 W.A. & A.C. CHURCHMAN BOXING PERSONALITIES...........11 AL DELANEY
    NEAR MINT 7...........................1938 W.A. & A.C. CHURCHMAN BOXING PERSONALITIES...........12 JACK DEMPSEY
    NEAR MINT-MINT 8................1938 W.A. & A.C. CHURCHMAN BOXING PERSONALITIES...........15 TOMMY FARR
    NEAR MINT 7...........................1938 W.A. & A.C. CHURCHMAN BOXING PERSONALITIES............20 JACK JOHNSON
    NEAR MINT 7...........................1938 W.A. & A.C. CHURCHMAN BOXING PERSONALITIES............26 JOE LOUIS
    EXCELLENT 5........................1938 W.A. & A.C. CHURCHMAN BOXING PERSONALITIES............34 MAX SCHMELING
    EXCELLENT 5........................1938 W.A. & A.C. CHURCHMAN BOXING PERSONALITIES............35 GENE TUNNEY

Thanks again to Mike (VitoCo1972) for introducing me to the set, because like I said above (back in September), if he didn't recommend this set to me (and generously send me some cards from this set), I never would have found that nice raw set on eBay.
  • One of the most undervalued vintage sports sets. They also seem to be rather easy to find in high grade, raw or graded.

It would be nice to see some scans if you ever get a chance. Especially that 8.5, it must be pleasure to look at.

The grades just posted today, so when I get them in hand (a week or so), I will scan them here.

I wasn't expecting any 8s or 8.5s, so now my plan will be to sell the 8s and 8.5, and replace them with NM raw (or graded PSA 7) copies, which should make the set free and then some.
