Is acetone okay on aluminum?

I think I probably know the answer to this, but acetone won't cause me any trouble on an aluminum coin, will it? The seller is apparently a big fan of PVC and staples (fortunately, the staples didn't cause the problem; unfortunately, the PVC flip did).

If the PVC residue hasn't etched the delicate surface of the aluminum, then bathe away! As always, only use acetone in a well ventilated area, and NEVER near any source of flame such as a hot water heater or gas furnace.

Acetone is as safe as water for your coin.

Dip a piece of aluminum foil in acetone and you'll have your answer. image

  • aluminum is a "cheap" metal like zinc. it rusts like steel except the rust is white instead of brown. for tin it`s called something else.

you state the staples did not cause the problem but they may have. the weaker metal will become the "sacrificial metal" in that enviornment. in the old days in steel hulled boats they would place zinc bars to displace rust on the steel.

What I meant about the staples was that the seller stapled the crap out of the flip and sandwiched it between more stapled pieces of cardboard for mailing, putting the coin at risk of damage when I opened it. The damage was solely due to the PVC flip the seller used.
  • can't see a pic- just a red x, but Michael- you have been here long enough to know that acetone won't hurt the item in question - when it comes to silver...watch what it can do to aluminum- try a piece of foil first- you will be amazed at the reaction....

Acetone is volatile guys- read the MSDS on it before you play mad scientist or smoething like it.

take it from an expert in safety- don't mess with man nature- we made it to screw the world...

    Isn't rust oxidation?

Nature (humidity and the gases in the atmosphere) playing heck on the elements that we use in our every day life?

  • Yes rust is a form of oxidation. But since rust occurs on iron.......oxidation occurs on aluminum.

  • OK to get into chemistry...which is not my field so if I get something wrong just slap me.

Rust is a term for iron oxides, reaction of iron with oxygen and moisture. its a common term for corrosion of iron. Other corrosion exists but not termed rust. Aluminum corrosion occurs slower and forms aluminum oxide in a process called passivation.

Where are these people even getting PVC flips these days? I would think by now (or long before) they would be phased out, yet I got a Morgan in a new looking PVC flip today.
