I was thinking about setting up a table at a show and I was told I needed a permit from the city/state? Anybody done this in the past. What needs to be done?
Ryan, I did it in New Jersey around 1996 during the lucrative days of Starting Lineups. I'm from Connecticut. It cost me $20 bucks for a one day show. I don't know what it is today. I paid the tax on sales and then had to cancel the sales tax permit by signing the bottom of their tax return sheet stating business was closed. It's a pretty simple process.
In Ohio they call it a vendors license. You are supposed to have one if you sell. They don't check that often but my understanding is that if you get caught without one there is a penalty charged that is kind of large.....When I did shows I had the license but canceled it when I stopped doing shows. .they used to charge an initial fee but I think they are free now. but not quite sure anymore.
In Pa. I had to get a sales tax license for a show. The promoter even gave me a persons name to contact. I contacted him and he knew exactly what was needed because he sold licenses for this all the time. Very simple process/ Make sure to remember to pay the sales tax though. Bob

<< <i>I appreciate your help. Do you get one at a court house/city hall or is there a number. It sounds like registering a car. Is that about right?

It depends on your state, Texas it is free. You just fill out an online application. However if you fail to report any sales Texas will send you a steep tax bill based on what they think your sales should have been even if there were no actual sales.
In Ohio you have to file quarterly and then an end of year filing...or at least that is the way it was when I had my license. Even if you had no sales for the quarter you still had to file with zero amounts. Once I stopped doing shows I canceled the license. It's not too hard.... at least in Ohio. They also have an online site where you can check for the procedures.
