Do Your Kids Collect Sports Cards?

This is more to the older collectors, but younger ones can answer too. I have a young son and daughter and was wondering if your kids collect. If so, how old are they and what to they collect. I really hope my son takes an interest in sports cards some day. Maybe my daughter to, but that would probably be more unlikely.

Thanks
Terry

    Hi Terry,

My Boys (5 & 6) and I collect raw 1974-1982 Topps Baseball sets (completed 1974, 1980-82), Topps SF Giants & SF 49ers Teams sets.

Sorting and stat reading is a big plus for them at this age, helps them with Reading & Math... plus, we have lots of fun together.

Best of luck to you and your children... you will find many kind & generous traders on these boards.

    take care,

    Mike
  • My son is 16 and he collects some vintage cards and is working on a signed 1956 Topps baseball set.

My daughter just turned 16 this week and collects hockey cards. Her favorites are Patrick Roy, Jeremy Roenick, and Wendell Young. She also collects autographs TTM
  • My sons are 11 and 5. They are more into Pokemon cards than sports cards, but they do collect their favorite players and teams. They do collect, so it's a start.
  • My son is 17 and seems more interested in collecting dust than anything else image

Maybe when he's done playing hockey and going to school and 'the girls', you know.

My daughter may actually turn out to be a collector... but she's a pretty intense student (takes school very seriously) right now.

I have three daughters, I will go no further on this statement.
  • My son is 9 and is just starting to get into collecting baseball and football cards, with a little help from some of the CU members. He has been collecting wrassling cards for a while now. So, a trip to Walmart usually costs me an extra $20 for a box of his cards.

My son turns 9 next week and had collected Pokemon cards for a couple of years, but switched to baseball cards this year. He likes the Topps cards with the gum...reminds me of when I was a kid.
Currently working on: Kurt Warner PSA 9 or 10

  • Interesting that this subject came up. I am just 34 but have three children with my son of 3 1/2 being the oldest. I was mentioning to my wife last night that I started a Paul Oneill PSA Basic Registry set, as he was my favorite player growing up, and I had some personal interaction with him when I was in 9th and 10th grades, (playing golf and going to Spring Training games he would leave me tickets for) and my wife was looking at me like I was the biggest dork in the world. I told her that I was hoping my boys would have such fond memories of a player one day down the road, and that I hoped like hell that at least one of them would get into collecting and have similar memories from collecting that I do.

I don't have kids, but my friend's 10 year old son started collecting a last year, so I gave him an entire album full of football & baseball cards. Nothing too expensive, but there were some decent cards in there. He LOVED them. He would take the album to school with him every day and trade cards with other friends who collect. He's pretty big into it now. When I used to lease a table at the local card shows, whenever a kid came up to my table (the kids that can barely see over the table), I would ask them who their favorite player was, and then I would give them 5 or 6 cards of that player. Their face would just light up. That's what it's all about man, that's the good stuff.

Not anymore, one bad experience with The Rip Master ruined that.

my son is 14 and daughter 11. The oldest collected for awhile, then did the pokemon and YuGiOh cards. He still has the cards he collected earlier but now with high school, playing football and basketball, his interest has waned. My daughter collect only certain players. She loves Grady Seizmore and has several of the Cavaliers cards, including the King. Being in the Cleveland area is what has given them their interests. The wife likes Brady Quinn, but I have to remind her that he's not a collectableimage

    Terry

I've spoken of this often - collecting with a son/daughter is one of the most rewarding things connected with having a family.

My son is now 25 - doesn't collect - I hope he'll get back into it some day - he can take over mine - if he wants.

We had a Saturday routine - I ran 3 miles - showered - we went to McD's for breakfast - then to about 2 to 4 cardshops - they were plentiful in the early 90s - then to the flea market - good times!

  • My kids collect boogers on their headboards.
There's a hole in my head where the rain comes in.
  • My sons are 16 and 13 and they go through periods of being really interested in cards and then something else gets their attention;girls ,sports, video games, and they lose any interest for months at a time.

My son and I rip new stuff every weekend. He has an album full of my dupes from 50's-80's Cincy Reds are his main thing as well as Derek Jeter cards. In Football it's Bengals and Brett Favre, he has a kids account @ Upper Deck where he enters his codes. He trades with his cousin (Reds for Indians) and likes it when I upgrade my Rose, Bench, Morgan, Perez, and Kluszewski stuff so he can add to his album. I took him to his first card show a few months back and we'll hit a few more this year. His interest is what pushed me back in (I quit in the late 80's).

My son is 11 and collects Pokemon cards and Cubs cards, especially Soriano. He is well aware of the 1952 Mickey Mantle and the Honus Wagner card. I bought a Wagner reprint and showed my son when he came back from school and told him I found it in the attic. He went crazy and ran to my wife and told her that we are rich!! I felt bad about it afterwards.

Collecting cards with your kids seems like a lot of fun. Mike it seems like you and your boys have a nice collection going. Hopefully, you have many more years of great memories ahead. Mike (Stone), I hope your son eventually gets back into the hobby. I am 33 and got back into it in my late 20's. I guess some of us wait until we get stability in our lives and start up again.

    TJMAC,

It is a lot of fun to collect with your kids... they have many funny comments about those '70's photos.

Good luck to anyone collecting (or may start collecting) with your kids... let us know if we can help, we posted an updated wantlist in the Vintage Trading Forum yesterday and have lots of duplicates available.
