Vatican II Council gold Pope Medals 1966?

Does anyone know if these medals are worth more than bullion? They are 18K gold proofs and were struck to commemorate the second ecumenical council in 1966. The obverse features likenesses of John XXIII and Paul VI. A friend of mine is looking to sell them.

Thanks for any insight.image

These are privately issued medals. I've got one or two of these that I got close to bullion a while ago. They do look nice in the case and are interesting nonetheless. Just MHO however and maybe Josephus or someone else can comment.

Nice looking set in the case! These types of unofficial gold medals seem to come up fairly regularly, but I must admit that I've never really paid attention to the prices since I've been trying to focus only on official medals. Some similar medals sold for a bit over melt at a recent Stack's auction, but I would think that you would need to find the right buyer for that. I would generally agree with STLNATS on the value being around bullion value for retail, probably less if you're trying to sell to a local dealer or such.
