Nice pick-ups, everyone. I'm eyeing quite a few pieces in today's session. Fingers crossed (wallet checked).

Update - very upset with the Heritage Live. Created a live proxy bid for two items. Watched as it didn't go off live on one of them. Tried to bid on the other (received the message - "Your bid of XXX was submitted") - but it never showed-up in the bidding. What the hell? Well, looks like I lost the chance to add to my primary collection image

A 20 Soles piece from Peru. 1863, an expensive year for US coinage. Not so expensive here. This is a single year type. 32.2g 0.900 fine 0.9334 oz gold. PCGS AU-55.
My largest world gold coin. I'm having fun with these Heritage auctions. At first, I thought it would all go by without me participating. But I must say so far i've won a few lots. Here's to hoping I will continue to be happy once I see them in hand.

I really like that Hogmouth in the OP. Heck, it's ALL nice, but the Leopold Hogmouth and that first 8R are easily as impressive to me as the gold.

    All very nice pieces.
I'd be interested in seeing a little nicer photo of newsman's 2000 Reis so the obverse design would be more pronounced.
Adam .. looks like you had a very good day at the auction.
LordM ... what can I say another unique "holey" coin for your collection, great find

The mexican coins were active. Roman, I know your pain. I picked out three higher quality 8 reales. After my internet bid was topped, I tried to bid using Ha live. Twice my bid showed but the lot closed prior to it being registered by the auctioneer. The third closed quickly before I could get a bid in.

I was not able to get the higher dollar coins but I did manage to scrap out some lower dollar good value wins.

I, too, had trouble with the HALive feature. One lot my bid showed as "proxy bid submitted" but the lot sold for $175 less than my bid. Another shows my bid as submitted and accepted but the site says I was outbid at the same $. So no new Canadian for me.

I was able to win 3 of the German Notgeld lots for my buddy. At least he's happy.

Lovely medal, but looks like someone was trying to steal New Hampshire's motto "Live Free Or Die"image Like the details in it. Great pickup.

  • Lord M, that holey 1887 with the Statue of Liberty hand engraving is interesting, especially since the Miss Liberty was only 11 years old in 1887. Any ideas on the meaning of "MA MA"?
  • lordmarcovanlordmarcovan Posts: 43,897 ✭✭✭✭✭
I found that piece impossible to pass up, since it was just one year after the Statue of Liberty was dedicated.

Anyway, I collect Seated dime love tokens by date, and though I didn't need that date, I consider "pictorials" to be an upgrade over simple monogrammed and initialed pieces. That one was irrestible to me. I bid stupid money on it to get it, and fortunately won it at a very fair price (not much more than half of what I bid).

"MA MA" on that is just what it says: "Mama". Somebody had that one made as a gift to their mother. The more formal "Mother" is a bit more commonly seen on love tokens, though.

Another one...one final item won late today...

    KM#7 1925 Yugoslavia 20 Dinara. 21mm. 0.900 fine. 0.1867 oz gold. 6.4516g. ICG MS-63. Mintage 1,000.

Perhaps one of the most common "1,000" mintage coins you will see. There must be a story behind that. Perhaps Krause is simply wrong.

Just a wild guess. Judging from the date, it's highly unlikely that this coin was minted for circulation purposes in Yugoslavia, (it was the time that the bimetallic system had already started to fall apart, and the coin was undoubtedly worth much more than 20 dinara in face value back then), so it's either an early NCLT passing as a circulating coin, (there are several other examples of this type of coins), or even a later strike with a 1925 date struck on it. That would perhaps explain the high grade and lack of demand for such a low mintage coin. I have a 1935-40 Greek coin in mind that falls into this category, I didn't just make this story up.

Really nice catches everybody, congrats, I love that French 50 gold francs and Rob's find, as well as Chuck's very pretty 2000 reis. Nothing for me this time, but some Swiss collectors got some great coins.

Gene and Roman, I wonder why you don't complain to Heritage formally, unless you think it's not worth the effort.
