$57 shipping. Who charges that much for one card for $2500. I think registered mail would have been well under $20. Good luck with this and still file the mail fraud and ins. fraud charges even if he refunds your money.
Here's an email that I just received this afternoon:
"I just noticed your recent feedback to blocksportcards on non-receipt of the 1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle. I just had the exact same thing happen to me on a 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth #149 PSA 6 from blocksportcards for $5700....USPS insured/delivery confirmation with no card inside. Block indicates insurance is being filed in your situation and that you will not suffer a loss. Is this correct and are you satisfied that the issue will be resolved to your satisfaction??? Have you communicated via phone with him?? Do you have his personal #?? Sorry for all the questions but, if my issue is not resolved to my total satisfaction, I will pursue legal and FBI action. I have done this once in the past, another 1933 Ruth card and won my case in Neveda. This is not only about the money but about ethics and someone thinking they can dupe me. I would like to discuss this further with you. Check my feedback. Please respond with your phone # and how your situation is proceeding. Thanks. Bruce"
Block may have been selling cards he didn't own or were in other peoples inventories and when he couldn't procure them he sent empty boxes and is attempting to use the insurance as a way to cover his butt.
Currently completing the following registry sets: Cardinal HOF's, 1961 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1972 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1980 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, Bill Mazeroski Master & Basic Sets, Roberto Clemente Master & Basic Sets, Willie Stargell Master & Basic Sets and Terry Bradshaw Basic Set
Ahhhh the 909...what a great place....Upland ,Fontana,Riverslime. Sorry you got ripped by the d-bag Larry Block. He even looks like a slime ball. I used to get nausea every time I would see Block Sportscards as an authorized dealer for Psa in the SMR. Not sure what happened but I have not seen any of his ads for quite a while. This guy has always been horrible for the hobby and hope this time he gets what he deserves. What he really deserves is unfortunately illegal. Good luck with the claim.
In my experience, you'll get the best results from the local DA's office (the DA's office in the seller's community). They certainly have a consumer fraud division. Bug them. If you are willing to go to the jurisdiction to help prosecution, that should help out. Again, not the police, but the DA's office. The cops are too busy chasing down child molesters to bother with internet theft. The amount of the theft might get someone's attention.
"Charlie, here comes the deuce. And when you speak of me, speak well."
<< <i>I am trying to figure how TWO cards can go missing like that.
They both get dropped into the same mailbox at the same time.
A crook comes along, removes the items from both envelopes and reseals the packages.
............
Sadly, all of my early hopes for a relatively easy insurance-claim flying, have now crashed and burned. >>
If he insured the Ruth for sale price it has to go registered. $5000 max insurance on anything less than registered, so he couldn't have done postage at home. It has to go thru the counter or it was underinsured.
I believe he shipped 2 empty boxes never considering that both parties could somehow meet.
Both injured parties need to talk to USPS at the seller's location and also the police/District Attorney's office at that location. If he did it twice he's done it more than twice.
This guy used to do the larger show circuit. Does he still exhibit at the National's? I didnt notice this guy at the National in Chicago, but honestly, I wasnt looking either. I am surprised someone hasnt kicked this guys a$$ if he is still doing shows. This is a real dirt bag!

Well Storm, we're definitely leaving ebay if the paypal thing doesn't change, however as for myself & the many others I know we won't be screwing people on the way out the door. My ebay name is treashnt5h29 - been on ebay for a long time and we've got over 10k feedback & 100%. It's not so much the added cost of having to take paypal as it is I just don't trust paypal. I personally know 2 dealers who had huge problems. One had a scammer who said he never got his gold shipment of $16,000 - my friend had a signed receipt from his registered mail shipment, but paypal took the money out of his account & it took almost 6 months for them to give it back. The other was a similar deal where the guy claimed he didn't get what he paid for and tried to screw my buddy out of $640. It only took 5 weeks for them to give the money back to him but it was a huge hassle and it took him hours of time on the phone with paypal to get his money. When the first incident happened I looked around & found the paypal sucks site & read many horror stories so I decided to just quit using them. I'll still use ebay to buy and send off my check or money order and hope an alternitive site finally catches on where we can sell again without paypal dictating how to do things.
PS- for the bunch thats going to say 'well just open another seperate bank account & only keep $10 in it and then paypal can't screw you over' i just say to you why woulld you ever want to place yourself into biz with a partner you cannot trust to start with?
buying Rhode Island Nationals please email, PM or call 401-295-3000

AND, neither will MOST of the folks who are leaving.
I am only advising "general" caution.
Some sellers are VERY angry and they may well feel like they can take it out on their final buyers.

I went to the post office yesterday and explained the situation to them. Fortunately, I know all the employees there and have a very good relationship with all of them. When I explained what had happened, they said "once a Postal Investigator takes the case they have a 99% conviction rate - this guy will probably end up serving time."
I am in the process of contacting the PI today. I also talked to Bruce Baxter yesterday who is the guy that had the same thing happen to him with a 33 Goudey Ruth. Unfortunately his loss is $ 5700.
Even though the events point toward wrong doing on Blocks part,to play devils advocate, how does anyone prove that there was not a card packed inside and that the buyers arent trying to screw the seller????? Probably not the case but how would anyone prove that it wasnt in there?? Why in the world would a seller not send anything valued over 1,000.00 via registered mail??

Mike - the Postal Inspectors usually do a real good job, and they are thorough, but the USPS employees did you a disservice telling you that they have a 99% conviction rate. It's not going to be a slam dunk. The guy made a mistake sending you and Bruce empty packages at the same time, and if anything that will be the mistake that proves your case.
I just hate to see you get disappointed even more if they can't prove it. Buying a 51 mantle should be a great experience, not the nightmare you've had.
Keep us posted (leaving out any details the thief might use to his advantage) and good luck!
Even if convicted the odds of serving any real time is not very likely. There was a local that was found guilty of Mail Fraud for selling around 300K in Beanie Babies and she had to pay a 500,000 fine/restitution and given 4 years probation. You are also looking at most likely no less than 12-18 months into the future.
Block now has 2 buyers in this thread who got empty packages (1951 Mantle and 1933 Ruth), and another negative feedback about an empty package (1956 mantle).

The only "Larry" to buy from is Larry Mayer of Larry's Vintage Sportscards. Apologies in advance to any other Larry's that are stand up guys.
I too believe that I also believe he did not care if the two met.
Crack will do that to ya.

I like his response to the NEG
"He will NOT Be out $ Filing Insurance Should let me fix before give NEG Feedback"----And what??? wait another 7 weeks????
