Private lessons in coin collecting?

An ad in the local paper today reads as follows:

COIN COLLECTING LESSONS IN YOUR HOME!
"Kids will love their private/fun half-hour coin lessons! Learn to hold a coin correctly, to determine it's value and condition. I bring everything you need to get started and bring new coins each lesson. I've owned some of the largest mail order coin companies in the USA. Extremely reasonable rates! Call (woman's name/phone)."

There are many purveyors of private lessons in our area, including (I kid you not) coaches who will teach your kid to ride a two-wheeler bike. However, I've never heard of coin collecting lessons. Does this sound legit?

Legit or not, I would run away from it...quickly.
If it is that important, find a local coin store/coin club.

I wouldn't be inviting strangers into my place like that for coin collecting.....you may not have expensive ones now but you never know when they may be back.
That's my thought...and I am not one of the paranoid ones around here....I can't wait to read THEIR replies image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

  • I didn't call to find out the rate. I'm curious, though. My take on this is that the ad was placed by the adult daughter of a retired guy, and that she's looking to find him an engaging and enjoyable way to get out of the house.

I know all of the kids and families who are involved in local coin clubs, so this is coming from outside the (admittedly small) local YN/ANA/club community.

I've heard of science guys and insect ladies who've recently livened up b'day parties and such for
    young kids.

I don't know, on the face of it, how a half hour of coining would be any different or be a
problem if local references were checked.

Sounds like a child molester trying to find someone stupid enough to let them into their home and teach their kids about the "proper handing of their coins" image

  • My friend called the ad. The coin lessons are being offered by a woman. She charges $25 per half hour lesson. She also teaches piano.

    That's resonable fee.
Should be a real treat for the kids.

I remember a lady who did something similar with bugs and bug collecting. She
left the little kids with the impression that they had just taken a high school science class.

The ad sounds odd to me. But so do ads for those "life coaches". All this time, I thought I could live day to day without a coach, but I guess not. image
