1961 Topps almost complet set. What's it worth?

I just purchased a high end almost complet '61 Topps set. There are 18 cards missing and the Yaz is the only star card that is missing other than a couple of All Star cards. 132 of the cards are already graded with 82 of them at PSA 7 or better and 39 at PSA 8 or better. The ungraded cards follow the same condition with all of them including the star cards coming in at NRMint-Mint. The Mantle card is a PSA 5 and the Mantle MVP is a BVG 4. What would this be worth in either complet form or break up value? Thanks. The SMR value of this if it were broken up is over $6000 but I realize I couldnt get that for it.

    This feels like a re-run

    huh?
  • If its this set its probably worth what you paid for it. Its probably a mid grade set overall. If the ungraded stars are NM-MT they world have been graded or the seller would have provided some scans.

If you are looking to make a porfit sell all the graded cards, stars, semi-stars, semi-hi's and hi's individually and the rest as a lot and you will probably come out ahead.

He sent me scans of all of the star cards and they are in great condition. Just wondering if I got as good a deal as I thought I did. Thanks.
  • I've broken a few raw EX-MT or better '61 sets on eBay in the past that went for between $3000-$4000 so you probably did OK. Good luck with your set.

  • very odd way to sell a set.... 8 pictures just like this:
the seller left money on the table thats for sure. No scans of any of the raw cards is troubling. most of the graded cards are commons it seems like. please update when you have in hand.

He sent me scans of some of the star cards that looked great. He also said that he really wanted $3000 or more and would be taking a hit at that which I can believe because of the grading fees alone and the condition of the set. He basically said that he would take a large hit because he had so much stuff and he was going to make a '61 set of all 8's and 9's.

the Mantle is a 5, the Mantle MVP is a BVG 4, Billy Williams rookie 7, McCovey 8, Brooks Robinson 5, Roberts 7, Frank Robinson 8, Al Kaline AS 7, Hank Aaron AS 7, Eddie Mattews 7, and several semi high and high number 7's and 8's. There are also a couple of OC 9's in the set among the better graded cards.

Without seeing the set/cards I can't say what it is worth.

Good luck though, 1961 is a great set.

Just an update since my '61 set arrived today. I am happy with the purchase. Just at first glance the ungraded cards are all in exmint-nrmint condition with a few worse and few better. The star cards are all in great condition with the exception of the Clemente which is way off center. The Aaron, Mays, Spahn, Mantle AS, Maris, and Banks are all near-mint and I might get them graded. The guy also included a few graded duplicates that he didn't have in the listing. Overall, I'd say I'm very satisfied.

Obama was born in 1961 - I thought this might be a political thread. LOL
