denarius?

This is probably a stupid question, and I should know this after 9 months in the hobby...but is All denerius almost fully silver, or is there some that is plated?

It varies through the history of the coin from almost pure silver to billon.
  • Ok, thanks

  • actually even some denarii that were supposed to be pure silver, were actually bronze coins plated with silver-- these official plated coins are called "fourees" (i think thats how you spell it)

There is debate as to whether there were any official issues that were fourrée. Many fourrée silver coins are obviously early contemporary counterfeit coins intended to pass in circulation as a pure silver coin. But there are some coins that are of convincingly good style and workmanship to possibly have come from an official mint.
