    That's a shame.

It's a shame they waited this long! Some of his in-game management decisions are baffling at best.

You have got to be kidding me!

Are they not in the middle of a pennant race?

Hope the team reacts positively to that move.

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • I think the problem is that they were in the middle of a pennant race.
  • they collapsed last year too after having an 8 game lead.

he keeps playing guys in slumps. They could do better. Hopefully this will shake them out of their slump.

Bingo. Either way I don't see how the move helps the team at this point, especially right before a series with the Cubs. Then again, maybe there was something going on behind the scenes and the organization knew that some guys were quitiing on him. Unreal that after the talk of winning the Central they may not even win the WC, especially after what CC has done for them.
  • I heard some guys on ESPN radio wondering about Yost's use of CC and Sheets. They basically said that Yost doesn't care about their long term health, especially CC's, because all he wants is the ring this year. It made sense to me since CC has been going so deep into so many games and he's not signed for next year. I wonder now if some of the pitchers were the ones that gave up on him?

Rumor has it that Yost was actually getting instructions from Dallasactuary on that...something about we don't need no BS bullpen. image

Has anyone ever seen Yost and Dallasactuary in the same room at the same time?

I will use yesterday's early game in the doubleheader as example number one. Ned switched up the lineup moving Corey Hart from the 5th spot to leadoff, inserted Ray Durham into the starting lineup hitting 3rd and moved Ryan Braun to 5th in the order. It must have woken up the bats for a short while, because the Brewers scored 3 early runs. They were up 3-1 in the game when Ryan Howard hit a 2 run homer to tie it at 3 in the 6th inning.

Fast forward to the 8th, Ned put Guillermo Mota in the game who immediately gave up a single to Jayson Werth. Ned went to the bullpen for lefty specialist Brian Shouse to face the left handed hitting Chase Utley. Utley moved Werth to second on a sac bunt. Here's where Ned went into "what in the world is he thinking?!" mode. As I stated, Shouse is a lefty specialist. He's had a bad history pitching to right handed hitters all season. Ned had him intentionally walk Ryan Howard. Ned left Shouse in against the right handed hitting Pat Burrell who singled to left, scoring Werth. They showed Yost in the dugout, sitting on the bench, dejected with glazed over eyes. Ned left Shouse in to face the switch hitting Shane Victorino who hit a 3 run homer from the right side! We went from a tie ballgame to down 7-3 based on Ned's stubbornness. He left Shouse in to face yet another right handed hitter, Pedro Feliz, who singled. FINALLY, Ned went to the bullpen and miracle of all miracles, Eric Gagne got us out of it. Sadly, the damage was done.

Truth be told, I wouldn't have been surprised if they had fired him between games in the doubleheader. He clearly gave up when Shouse was on the mound and just didn't know what to do anymore.

In the second game, he used the same lineup as the first game. He's got a bench full of young guys who should be getting some playing time since the usual starters are stinking it up at the plate.

Mike Rivera, our backup catcher, has been a fireball when he gets to play. He's hitting .311 with a .382 OBP. He didn't get so much as a pinch hit appearance in a day/night doubleheader on the hottest day of the year in Philly. Ned left Jason Kendall and his .248 BA, .330 OBP in the game instead.

Mat Gamel has had 2 AB since his Sept 1 callup. He's got a strikeout and a double. The guy hit .329 at AA this year with 19 homers and 96 RBI. He's riding the pine while our starting crew is mired in a terrible slump.

Alicedes Escobar, the shortstop of the future for the Brewers, is 2 for 3. He's had a few pinch running appearances.

The only September callup who has gotten 5 AB is Brad Nelson. He's 1 for 5 in 6 games.

All in all, I know Yost gave his heart and soul to this franchise. Unfortunately, it seems like he just didn't have the stuff to take the team to the next level. Hopefully, a little change of scenery will wake up the team. I'm excited to see who is in the lineup tomorrow night at 7:05 in Chicago. In the end, they can't get much worse than they've been the first half of the month.

Maybe they can hire Jim Gatner?

Actually, they promoted one of Gumby's teammates, Dale Sveum, from third base coach to interim manager. They also brought back Robin Yount as the bench coach since they relieved Ted Simmons of his bench coach duties as well.

Gantner is actually managing the Wisconsin Woodchucks this season. image

Edited to add: terrific class photo of Dale Sveum that is circulating locally:

They should move him up and put the 3rd base coach back image

He obviously knows what he is doing if he is already managing.
  • Firing Yost at this point just seems like Melvin and Attanasio are conceding the fact that they wont win the division or the wild card since the Brewers are not only mired in their terrible slump but they play half of their remaining games against the team which has just had the best two day pitching stretch in the history of baseball and seems to somehow be getting better and better- as a long suffering Brewers fan, it pains me to admit it, but the Brewers seem to be admitting that they have no shot

What I dont understand though is why Ted Simmons was fired as well

Firing a manager who has you this deep into the season with a solid chance to make the playoffs is excuse building. I don't buy that often repeated line "we need some one to take us to the next level". It's a line used when you really don't have a good reason but don't want the fans to blame you. Any one who has worked many years in a large company has heard that excuse a dozen times. Its gutless.
    Here is a quote I posted in another thread;

Here's a quote from Melvin, sounds like chickenbleep to me.

"Ned gave us 95% of the schedule with a chance to (make the playoffs). We'll leave it up to Dale to see if he can figure it out the rest of the way. Ned admitted he didn't know why this is happening. I don't think he was totally shocked.

"That's the part that's difficult for me. Ned's never quit on me, never quit on his players, never quit on his coaches. I feel like I'm quitting a little bit on Ned by not giving him a chance (to finish the season) but he said he understands."

Simba wasn't fired. He was "reassigned" to a special advisor role. I wouldn't be surprised if he's in the running for the Manager position next season.
