<< <i>Did they print these in Mexico or did Topps print and ship? >>
I quickly skimmed both and didnt see a printing location, Though the website said this- "While the exact details of the printing and distribution have been and remain somewhat a mystery"
What is known is that the cards came in two types of 36 pack boxes, 2-cards per pack with gum and 4-cards per pack without gum. The wrappers featured 5 different players and were probably the best looking wrappers of any set. The featured players were Bob Griese, OJ Simpson, Mike Boryla, Brian Sipe, and Steve Bartkowski. The packs that had the grape and banana flavored gum invariably had one card that was damaged by the gum. Collation on this product is terrible. Out of 72 cards, I had one box that only had 12 different cards, with 22 of them being #464 Howard Twilley. If you get a box with the major stars in it, you've just hit the jackpot. The best box I have heard of had 6 or 7 #360 Walter Paytons in it.
As far as I have been able to determine, the majority of the supply of Topps Mexican cards were brought up from Mexico by Steve Freedman in the early 1980's. I have heard the total was about 20 cases. These cases were then sold and over time have been mostly opened. For a while, Mike Hattley at Touchdown Treasures had a supply of boxes and Mark Murphy, the BBC Kid had a case or so. There are a couple of dealers with unopened boxes as of this update. With the poor collation of cards, for years there was speculation that a complete 528 card set did not exist. I believe the first set was assembled in the mid-1990's. There are occasional finds in Mexico of cards or even near-complete sets. However, most of these have proven to be worn and range in the Pr to VGEX range.
Recently a few collectors have been pursuing PSA graded sets on the PSA Registry. There are 17 sets registered, with the highest ranked set being 100% complete with an average grade of 8.02. Congrats to Bigjimmi, that is an awesome feat. The number 2 set on the registry is also 100% with an average grade of 8.01. Also an awesome set by Don.
In 2008, Beckett further updated the listing of the Mexican set with a total price of $23,500, up 46% from the 2007 guide and 135% from the guide before that. Beckett assigns SP status to 76 of the cards and increased their values. The SP designation fails to recognize the all short printed cards in the set. In addition, some of the commons are listed at $20 or $25, possibly indicating an SP status, but not explicitly designated. While the revised prices are in the right direction, they still do not reflect the actual scarcity of some of the cards. Cards that are listed as $200-300 in NM-MT that get picked up for $100-$300 in poor condition are more representative of the difficulty of the short printed cards. If there were actual NM-MT cards of the most difficult short prints available for sale, in my opinion they would sell for several multiples of the guide price.
I have a very very minor packers team set on the back burner. If I don't already have Carter I'd be glad to buy one from you to help you get at least some of your dollars back. I'll check later tonite.
As one of the resident experts on this issue, thought I'd chime in with a few comments....
1989FleerBillRipkencollector got the history pretty much sport on.
Distribution is absolutely horrible. I once got 17 Ken Anderson's and 14 Jeff Van Note's in the same box.
Four card packs are much scarcer than two card packs, and are highly prized by those working on the set because the cards are guaranteed not to have any gum stains.
To the best of my knowledge, BigJimmi was the first person to complete the set and has since been working on upgrading his set's quality (I did quite a bit of trading with him about 5-10 years ago).
I actually acquired my first batch of raw cards from the set (about 150) in 1977, when it first came out, in a trade with a friend of mine whose father had been posted to Mexico City by the State Dept. for a year. However, I did not start seriously working on the set until the mid-90's, when the advent of the Internet and email allowed me to start making contact with other collectors.
I am currently down to my last card (#3 - Rushing Leaders), and have assembled my set completely through trades, opening wax, my original batch, and finding the occasional card on Ebay.
If anybody else is interested in cards from this set, please contact me, as I have 200+ different duplicates in various conditions.
Bigjim was the 4th person to complete the set. Hattley was the 1st . Tony Rigby was the 2nd and I was 3rd.
Hi ping4u43 please let me know when the box shows up. If they are 4 card packs please let me know ASAP.
I was lucky and got my stuff from Steve who got if from another steve who brought the stuff back from mexico. At one time I had over 100 "uncut strips" 20 4card boxes and many 2 card boxes. I opened it all up. Jim also bought a couple of 2 card box cases. Almost all of the unopened stuff is gone.
Yes the 2 card and 4 card packs are horrible with doubles. If you do get lucky like me you can pull 4 largents or a couple of Archie griffins. Watch for resealed packs. The 2 center cards on a 4 card pack should have no wax on the front or back. Many people try to take the only clean cards from 2 card packs and make 4 card packs. But 2 card pack cards most of the time will have a little wax on the back. Don

<< <i>Well I guess I will be in for a big suprise, I bit the bullet and bought the box Steve had. >>
Good Luck. Dont those 2 card packs have gum? The other card will have a wax stain.
My packs all came from BBCX. I don't think Steve knew that they were the 4 card packs.
