New coin better than expected....how about you?

We see a lot of threads on here with people complaining that the coin they received wasn't what they expected, looked worse in hand, wasn't as colorful, had more surface marks, wasn't as described, was overgraded etc.....image

How about posting some coins that you recieved that were far better than expected either grade wise or colorwise? image

Here is a new purchase for me.....I knew it had bands of color from the images but I expected them to be much more subdued. I was also suprised out how clean the coin is....certainly looks like PCGS was having an off day as these beats the pants off all of my other MS64 morgans. Needless to say I was a happy camper when the coin arrived image

  • I love the look of that subtle toning.

Also, I would agree that 64 is conservative for that coin.

    nice pick up.image
  • That is one beautiful coin, Shane! Congrats on the pick-up!

got this one from Brian Greer. As many know, Brian does not have photos on his web site. He left out the phrase "drop-dead gorgeous" in his text description of this coin:

  • I picked this nickel up on ebay for $36. I expected an AU coin. Thse are the sellers pics and I felt the color could be interesting but still on an AU coin. The coins color is more incredible than I ever expected (from these pics) and the coin is a full luster solid MS63 or 64 (a couple tics from gem). A very pleasant surprise.

I'm generally not a fan of toned Morgan's, but that's one pretty coin! Congrats Shane!

Very nice Morgan Shane! I'll bet that was a great surprise when you opened the package!

Here's one I won from an eBay auction. I'm pretty sure the seller had put up your basic standard full slab scans with eBay's regular photo size. I'm not even sure why I wanted this coin as I could see nothing special, though it was in an older fatty slab. It could be that I was not as particular at the time, which was sometime before I listed my set in July of '04......

and Barnyard...if you bought that half dime...sight unseen...you get a YOU SUCK from me image

agentjim007...certainly looks UNC and attractive from what I can see....do you have better pictures of the coin?

I know my picture taking limitations so I haven't tried. I wish I could get a pic like the ones some of the guys here take.

    that's a great looking coin!!

I've said this before and I've gotten flamed for it but I think PCGS has gone way too tight on grading Morgans. (or perhaps in the past they went way too easy and now have to correct for this).

This easily would have been a 65 two or three years ago.

While that is a very nice looking coin, I personally do not think it's an MS65 coin. I would expect that the flatness on the ear and hair would keep it out of the 65 holder in addition to some of the hits that are "muted" by the attractive toning.

    Is that a VAM-1D ?

I have no idea....I have the book but have never taken the time to match any of my Morgans up to known vams......it that a common one? Also keep in mind when looking at the O-mint coins.....the strike isn't as good as it is on other mint Morgans...below is an example of another 1883-O I own in MS65....notice the same slatening of the ear and hair details...

I am in no way an expert on VAMs but those marks on the wings are fairly easy to spot.

As for commonality, I have absolutely no idea.

My favorite year for collecting. Awesome example. image

I just love the different varieties on the date.
  • Thanks for the info Lee...judging from your images...it would appear to be the vam and a little cooler than some of the others I have seen......image
  • my lower left icon half centavo. I couldn't believe when it arrived. upon rotation, a kaleidoscope of color, I especially love the yellow near the top of the obverse. I then encapsulated it at ngc. impossible to photograph. the slab is cavernous and robs it of light. after a trip to pcgs it is now surrounded by light and I'm truly happy!
