Crossing over Old ANACS vs. NGC graded coins

I was just looking at my old submissions and realized that every single half dime (4 of 4) from an old ANACS small slab crossed to PCGS with a maximum of a 1 grade downgrade, while I am batting about .500 with newer NGC slabbed coins (3 for 6). The NGC coins have also been downgraded from 1 to 3 grades in all cases.

It has really made me re-think my bidding strategy for coins in "other" holders.

Then again, my sample size is so small that maybe it's just an anomaly. Anybody have any insight who has had more crossovers of the two?

I try to cross the same kinds of coins and am 100% on old ANACS holders (small white, no problem holders) and much less successful with NGC holders of ANY era. Grades submitted for cross have been from XF-40 to MS-65.

Do you crack them out first or do you submit them in their holders?

A dealer once told me that he always cracks first; he thought that if coins were submitted (to either TPG) in their holders that "competitive issues" might arise, depending on the holder the coin was in.

Check out the Southern Gold Society

  • I have done it both ways- cracked 2 and crossed 2.

imho...bias could exsist...old anacs have respect according to threads pertaining here

i've seen the average of same grade/upgrade crossing with old anacs.................................................good bias

ngc is a different grrranimal though and can be all over the place with cross attempts..............not so good bias

series/designations too are in play as many would attest

holder strategies is grown into all bashing aside....i have mine...not from numerous submitting but from forum concenses here...not ats

PCGS does not view ANACS as a threat. NGC is another story. That's why you get the results you do. It's all about perception.

It might depend on the coin serries.

To me it seems with most cents that ANACs was about as tough in standards as PCGS and maybe tighter than NGC.

Other serries or proofs and higher grades might be totaly different.

I have never attempted a cross-over with the coin in another holder, however I have cracked coins from Ngc and Anacs and had them graded at Pcgs with good success. Most of the time the coins were graded the same as in the previous holder.A couple coins went down 1 point(65 down to 64)

This wasn't my case recently. I submitted 2 ngc coins and an ICG coin in their holders and they all crossed. I think PCGS wants nice coins to be in their holders.

<< <i>When you say older ANACS holder, is that all the smaller holders or certain smaller holders (not talking about any of the net graded smaller holders here)? >>

no-problem smaller holders, alphanumeric/six digit/seven digit serial numbers...there may be others
  • ........the funny thing is it all depends on the coin : irregardless of who's holder it's in or when it was graded image
  • Realone, I was talking about the old small size white no problem holders as Barndog described.

  • I am batting 100% with even crossovers from old ANACS, sounds good but it amounts to 4 hand picked coins.

NGC, I am batting 100% also, but from what I have seen, I need to look at more coins to find one that is decent for the grade. I have 12 good VAMs in NGC holders at PCGS for crossover, we will see how I do.

My other opinions on grading services:

PCGS, I don't agree with all coins I see, but I am much more likely to buy with a bad picture. I know this is their board, but I am actually telling the truth.

SEGS - either way over graded or way under graded, they are all over the place, buy the coin not the SEGS.

New ANACS - I am seeing a lot of coins that I would consider cleaned in problem free holders. Mostly AU coins, must be net graded without the problem labels

PCI - I have no clue, I have had zero luck finding a good for the grade coin. COuple old green labels were decent, gold labels stay away.

ICG - Only have a couple older ones and they were also hand picked and are decent for the grade.

In a nut shell, buy the coin and not the holder. Then reholder the coin in whatever holder you want.

I've also had good luck (100%) with ICG.

Right you are! Obviously, the lower percenters are due to the submitter. image
