Home Trading Cards & Memorabilia Forum

My morning project

I know there are lots of ways to store graded cards safely, but most of the cases that I see are way out of my price range. I was looking at the Big Lots ad online yesterday and saw this

I had purchased one of these same safes last year to hold some small important documents, but never considered using it as a card case. The safe cost me $30 last year, but is on sale for $18. The safe is waterproof and fire resistant, so I went to big lots and picked up a couple more. I then stopped at the hobby store (Hobby Lobby) and bought some foam.
The result is a $25 safe that can probably hold as many as 80 cards. I have 66 cards in the pictures below. Here is the link to the ad Honeywell Safe at Big Lots

  • the only thing i would say about safes is to open them often. many years ago, i let a lot of time to pass without opening the safe up to air it out, and things got soft and wet (humidity)

    I was thinking about that.
I've got several of those packets of silica (sp) that they put in with just about everything to keep moisture out.
I believe if you throw in a few of those you shouldn't have a problem.

Nice. The foam looks a little discolored on the top? Did you set the case on fire to test it out or something?

I was thinking about putting in my Allen Knicely collection and testing to see just how waterproof it isimage

That, and if you know it will be some time before you open it, put in a few sheets of paper towel on top. The paper towel, should absorb most if not all the moisture.
