History of Upper Deck SP sets

Upper Deck made the SP set between 1993 and 1997. In 1998, it seems as if they split the line into at least two or three different sets. SP became SPx and SP Authentic, along with SP Minors.
For Upper Deck collectors, is the SP Authentic set considered the direct descendant of regular SP, or do most people just consider that the SP set ended in 1997 on its own? Did UD ever bring SP back in the early 2000s?

SP was considered Upper Deck's top tier set, and SP Authentic continued that.
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.
<< <i>Thanks for the replies. I was considering baseball when I asked the question. I certainly think SP Authentic and SPx have to be different brands since they have overlapping numbering for each set. >>
In my raw albums, I have the SPX separate, and all the others together.
Upper Deck did this with Collector's Choice also. Changing the name to MVP. (And ignoring the 1 or 2 years it was "UD" Collector's Choice).
I also separate the Select and Select Certifieds...but I combine the Ultra and Ultra Sensations. So I guess I go by little rhyme or reason.
