That 8R. looks to have some tarnish on it.....image

It can probably be dipped out, though. image

Nice one, really! You're working on a date run of these in gem, no doubt. image

Interesting look! Can someone explain die polish to me? Is the planchet polished by hand (or my machine) before the coin is struck, after, or is it something entirely different? Thanks.

  • Beautiful natural toning! That can't be faked by the oven crew. I love coins where the letters of the legend provide just enough protection from pollutants to create a shadowing effect near the rim. Again, I must say, that is a beautiful gem!
  • VERY NICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have managed to acquire a few 8 Reales but they are not something I collect per se... A sweet coin and one that would be a major addition to my accumulation of 8 reales if I should find it at the right price... There is something about big crude silver coins that just turns me on!

Those lines are raised instead of incuse. The die that made the coin was polished with an abrasive, not the planchcet. The lines that were scratched into the die make a coin with raised lines.

    Nice coin!

Fascinating. I love these. I've never seen one with such die polish lines before!!!

I sort of wonder if the coiner running the stamp machine pulled and saved this one himself. Probably one of the first off of the dies.
