Swiss shooting festival medals are well known for their beautiful designs, but the Germans made 'em too.
Most of the Swiss ones I have seen were in silver, and some are considered coins, or quasi-coins, since I guess they were equivalent to a 5-franc piece.
This piece, not being silver unless it is heavily toned silver, I dunno. How big is it? Without seeing the edges of the 2 x 2 (or 2.5 x 2.5), I can't really gauge its size.
Looks to be more of a "maverick", as the token people would call it. A more generic prize medal that might have been used in several different places.
I am not sure exactly what it says... The best shooter/shot? Anyway, I would love to add it to my collection of WTF is it to the stuff I have no clue about?... It appears to be silver, and the hat looks to be Italian or Austrian in my mind. This is just based on pics of the period... I have some German coins available to trade if interested. Rick

It means "protecting/defending the best" from the transitive verb schuetzen which takes the dative (hence, "dem besten" or the best - are being protected).
Nice old skin!

The Best Shooter would be my guess. Or maybe The Best Shot?
Too bad there's no date, any guesses out there?

It is almost the size of a quarter - the 2x2 is quarter size.
I thought it was cool so being my usual unfocused self - I bought it

Based on the rim beading, general appearance and font, I would guess mid-late nineteenth century, Southern German/Austrian or Swiss...
