im referring of course to the spots on the coin that make it look like apple jacks cereal.....nice huh?

Slabbed before production ended.

yeah, i wondered about that as well......a few weeks ago i saw this sitting on a dealers shelf and i noticed a few things

first of all, who the heck has this coin slabbed?? i mean its a $5 coin, right? why would pay slabbing fees.....this caused me to think that maybe it was someone who what not that "hobby savvy"

add to that the fact that the slabber of choice was PCI (reinforcing that savvy comment) and then throw in the fact that it says mintage unknown (which leads me to believe that it was slabbed early in the year 2000 before complete mintage records would have been known)

well, you can probably tell where my mind was going at this point, keeping in mind that i havent flipped it over to examine the reverse yet......i'm imagining a non collector receiving this in a box of General Mills finest and submitting it to PCI and here this treasure is right before me, offered for a song......oh yeah, i left this part out; in my overactive imagination the toning spots on the obverse were certainly from spending time in a box mingling with cereal

well, the dealer handed it to me and i turned it over to find no evidence of detailed tail feathers.......i still bought the coin because i was with my daughter and she likes the gold coins "with the mommy and baby on them".

for the record, here is the reverse:



while i realize this isnt the cheerios version, the very end of the tail does seem different on this coin vs. other Sacs i have owned......the end of the tail seems to have two sets of feathers overlapping each other (think 7/8 tailfeathers in the Morgan series)
is this normal? is it the product of just a hammered strike coin? opinions welcome
