  • I'd like to hear from the CRO duo on this matter.

Maybe a nice "Coin Commentary" on the CRO site,
but give us the short and sweet here first! image

<< <i>amazing how so many people forget how a lot of these toned coins

people on this forum claim to know the coin docs, heard of their
recipes, dealers buy from them to sell to collectors... there is such
a shady side of toned/messed with coins that i think many are in
    denial.

taco bell napkins summarizes the potential for havoc nicely. >>

I won't disagree with you on the fact about the tone coins, but wonder if you have tried the taco bell napkin experiment that you, and others, keep referencing?
If not, you should try it before using it as gospel. If you have, then I would love to see pictures of the results you have gotten on all the different denominations/metals. You make it sound like a taco bell napkin can tone any coin in any patten and color.....

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I say they're here to stay. Too many PT Barnum spawn out there, who don't care about their money.

Only a very small fraction of rainbow toned coins command enduring premiums. The wannabes are always in flux. As far as attractively original classic toners (not rainbows) are concerned, I think they are here to stay for the most part. Originality has stated its case and I think the overall market has responded well, at least for the $500 and up end. Can't see a point in a return to future epidemic blast white dipping. Of course, this is just a hipshot guess. I do think most of what Teletrade calls rainbow toners are a fad and I have been expecting it to die for a while. A matter of time but I am not holding my breath.

Most of us who know our series, know which coins you'll have to pay up for. Nicely toned coins will never go out of favor.

The collector who has learned to recognize natural colors on coins when he or she sees them is the true student. One can only know about this by really paying attention to what one is seeing, looking at a lot of coins and then using one's intelligence to draw the right conclusions.

Laziness of the mind is epidemic these days in this country. The numbers of true students,as described above, are becoming fewer and fewer with each passing decade.

The condition described above is not a fad.

Whoever is careless with the truth in small matters cannot be trusted with important matters.

  • Rainbows are even more remarkable than legitimate album toners ... only a special confluence of circumstances involving decades of storage and very slow reactivity could produce the finely graded thin film oxide/sulfide layer carefully crafted by nature that results in a true "rainbow" (as defined by the astute collector, and not by Teletrade). The beauty of these coins is beyond question, and they are here to stay. As to their value, that is determined in the marketplace. Supply and demand change over time. But it is much easier to manufacture artificially whitened coins than artificially toned coins !! Here's what I call a rainbow:

To answer your question more directly,Stefanie, take a close look of the pics posted by LeeG and Sunnywood.Show these pics to your husband and ask him if he thinks these gorgeous and originally toned pieces,Lincoln cents and a dollar, are a "fad," as he says.

And then let us know what he tells you.image

do you not see the posts on this very forum showing other member's experiments?

i myself do not do such things because i am not a coin doctor ;-)

but since you asked, look at this coin! http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=26&threadid=634768&highlight_key=y&keyword1=napkin

  • Where's the final say so on this matter from the Gentlmen at CRO?

I'd like to hear their input on this issue.

  • Stef, I think your husband is correct, I have already noticed toned coins going for lower prices because I have actually won quite a few with small bids . I still like them though!!image

fc, I have seen those threads and pictures....I just haven't done it myself so I am not tossing it out there as an absolute.
You know, for certain, that it was ONLY the napkins that did the toning? You know the atmosphere/air that they were in? You know all the other factors so you can just pinpoint the napkins and that anyone using said napkins would have that result?

Come on now...I thought you were less trusting than that....maybe just cynical and so anything that allows cynicism is trustworthy?
