1807 British Halfpenny arrived

This one came in the mail today, raw, a fingerprint, but otherwise a nice looking unc. It has patches of very nice light blue green toning on both obverse and reverse.

The only thing that bothers me about the British dealers it this arrived in a little paper envelope, inside a bigger padded envelope. You would think they could spring for some mylar flips.

Brit dealers are notorious for ill handling of coins. It's a miracle any came through unscathed.

True story from back in the 1970s.....the old Bowers & Ruddy, when in Calif., ordered about 20-30 or so 1799, 1806, and 1807 halfpenny proofs from no less than Spink & Son. The large manila envelope arrived at the B&R offices some weeks later with each coin in nary even a small 2x2 envelope. They were all just dumped in the one envelope....JINGLE-JANGLE-JINGLE-JANGLE. image

Well, at least they were only about 15-20 quid each back then!!! image

Nice tone to your 1/2d., btw. image

I know someone who worked for Bowers & Ruddy back then. He said they'd receive original cased 19th century proof sets, throw away the packaging, and sell the coins individually. He also said they had bags of US silver dollars on the floor they walked on. I wonder how many coins were damaged by carelessness back then. image
