Another toning vs. white, spy vs spy thing

What happens when the monster toned, highest-(up)graded coins are compared to high-grade brillant white coins, and the white coin are "technically" better?
Although toned beauties are in vogue currently, soon, will pcgs raise the grade of previously graded white coins, as they are doing now with the toned monsters?
Is the scale getting to small "at the top"?

and the white coin are "technically" better....the technical grade is just part of the grade....thus if you have a technical 66+++ almost a 67 with 68 monster toning you would most certainly give it the grade of 67......now how bout that 66+++ with 69 monster color???does it go to 68????....well it could!!!...well now for the hardest of hard ones....how about that 66++++++ with 70 monster to dye for toning...does it go to 69????not!!!!but i own some 68-- coins with 70 monster colors that have been graded 69

yes they will .....as soon as the market demands change to wanting white coins....however i dont see that happening .....anytime soon ( as in many years ).....you see there is a new customer on the block...they want monster colors....they dont want all white coins that all look the same...the future collector will be a color freak obcessed with finding the wildest colors......

this is my take...i dont think it sucks....i do love monster colored coins and i do like a nice white brilliant moose every now and then

    hope this helps

I will almost always take a brilliant white coin over any toned coin. It would take an amazing toned coin for me to consider it over a white one. Just my opinion. I like the way they came off the press. But if a white one is "cheaper" because it is totally original, then I am all for it (until I sell).

I find coins with monster tone highly appealing, much higher than a simple white coin. Darker toning hides marks pretty well so that could be one of the reasons for higher grades given to toned coins. I would imagine a totally white ms67 Franklin would be highly difficult to locate as a toned 67 wouldnt be as tough.

    Gregg,

    That Washington is killer!

Look at the premiums being paid for nicely toned coins today, and you know what's in demand. So now might be a good time to buy lustrous, minimal mark white coins, but then I look at Monsterman's toned quarter, and know what I prefer. Helluva coin!

Beauty and the associated buyers premium is in the eye of the beholder. We all know that "Monster" toned Morgans go for multiples of book value and that AT has become more prevalent because of this factor.

For myself, I am now leaning towards a middle ground where I really appreciate a nice golden tone on a Mercury. I am not attracted to some of the darker tones, but again we all vote with our wallet on toned versus "Blast white" coins. Neither is inherently better to me.

  • I would surely take even a moderately toned dime over the common white one any day.
  • Greg, i was set up at a show this weekend and a man came up to me and offered a very attractively toned washington for sale. It was in a Pcgs holder MS67, can't remember the year but the coin only merrited a tech. grade of 64-65, so i figured i'ed offer him 66 money for the piece. You would of thought i punched him in the mouth, he called me everything except a human. I explained that it was no where near a 67, i don't care how attractive the toning was and if were mine i would submit it for a regrade. I saw him on the last day of the show still trying to sell the piece, so apparently i was not the only person that felt the piece was in fact overgraded and i personally LOVE toned quarters. Just thought everyone would enjoy hearing about this.image
