2008 Clad Proof Kennedy,Check out The Date

While Looking At My 2008 Clad Kennedy Proofs, I Noticed in The Date on All my Sets the First ZERO in 2008 is VERY Thin compared to the Other Zero and the Other Numbers.I Only have a Point and Shoot Macro camera and i took a quick Photo without mounting the camera, soo the Picture is BAD,but i wonder if everyone elses Date is the Same way? It surely is very noticeable. Opinions Please.....Oh yeah, Nice Black spot on the Chin huh? Ray in Florida..

The 8 looks kind of off too and what is that on his chin?

Thanks Rob. These are actually my Clad 2008 Proof sets that i got awhile ago from my Annual Subscription. My 5 Silver Proof Sets were "delivered" last week and left on the sidewalk by UPS! I Live in a 4 story, 80 Unit Condo Complex, sooo you can only guess what happened to that order. The mint says to call back in 30 days in case someone "Returns it" to them. Yeah Right! Almost $250.00 out the window at this point. I'm not sure what will happen now, but, according to the mint, i can't do anything until 30 days has passed. First time in all my years living here a package was taken,or mis-delivered. I'm really curious about the Zero's in the Date on that Clad Kennedy? Ray in Florida..

I Saw that "8" as well. That's why i'd like others to check their Pieces and Compare the Date Features. Maybe a New Variety,lol.....Oh,on his chin is a nice black Spot! I Guess it's part of the Great Quality control at the Mint. Ray in Florida..
  • I waited and ordered both together, so I will have a clad to take a picture of when the order shows up.

I hate UPS for this reason. They won't put the package in a location safe from the elements. They could easly set it on my front porch by walking 15 more steps. Instead they set it at my side door all of the time and once the package they delivered got rained on. Wet soggy box. I was angry. Thank goodness the book was in shinkwrap and unharmed.image

Thank you very Much Fred, I Appreciate it. I Only have 5 clad proof sets and they're all like that and the "8" looks weird as well. Regards from Ray in Florida..

    hey ray,both the 2008 clad & silver proof sets i have look like yours.maybe a new variety?.image
  • Thanks for letting us Know Ken. It will be interesting to see if others report the same thing. It sure caught my naked eye and i have extremely poor eyesight. Fred is "THE MAN" when it comes to this and he just posted that it's a Polished Die. (Does that bring any premium)? I Really see the quality of the Mint Products Released getting worse all the time. That Black Spot on the Chin is certainly not what a New Proof Coin should Look like. Ray in Florida..
  • The one with the blue is clad, the silver is red.

  • Thanks for Posting the Photo's Rob. That First ZERO is definitely an oddball on ALL I've seen soo far! The 2nd Zero looks Perfect! Your 8's look ok too. My "8" looks sick....Ray in Florida..

That's interesting that yours are all ok. Thank you for your input. I Hope there are more responses soo we can get an idea of just how many are "Normal" and how many are not. Ray in Florida..
  • Funny, I was just noticing this last night... The 8's on both my clad and silver halves seem to be weakly struck, very little to no cameo frost, and some nearly blend into the field. Held at an angle, the digit is very shallowly struck.

I have 3 out of 3 Proof Clad sets with the Die Polish effect identified by RayNY2E and Mr.Weinberg. For the record, in the last month and a half, I have received from the Mint, 3 overzealously polished Proof Kennedy Halfs and a struck through 08w $10 UNC Buffalo that looks like the Indian had a bowl of spaghetti dropped on his head and a scar down the entire side of his face. I thought that the Mint says these "Numismatic Coins" are struck from specially prepared planchets with the highest quality controls blah...blah...blah. What the heck is going on here? HM

Quality Control seems to have been cut from the Annual Budget Aaron!
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.
