SMR should List Set and Common Values for Early 70's

I'm surprised that the SMR still doesn't list complete set and common values (with a few notable exceptions) for early '70's sets. Aside from 1970/71 commons and high #'s from '72, there are no common prices listed (as of Nov. SMR) for 1972 on up. I know that the set values are just the aggregate of adding all the graded cards in the set but it would be a handy reference. What do you think?

Actually, the latest SMR (3/02) does list prices for 1972 Series 1-5 common singles. All series of 71s are listed too. Not that they're realistic, but they're listed. 1969 is the most recent issue for which they list a price for the set, however.

I agree. It should at least go through 1973 for set and common prices. I think a pretty strong case could also be made to extend it to 1975.

It couldn't hurt to list common 9 prices through 1975 or 1976. People collect them, dealers sell them, there is an active market.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • There may be an active market, but the prices are too volatile to nail down a price that will be very meaningful. All this stuff goes for what people are willing to pay, and whatever they happen to be listed for in a price guide is of little importance. Whatever price you come up with is going to be too high for the easy stuff, and too low for the hard stuff.
  • waitilltheytrytosell - I agree but couldn't the same be said for a majority of PSA cards? I mean a '69 Ed Kranepool recently sold for $50 even though it books for about $10. Even some of the high population cards vary greatly in what they sell for. Adding pricing to the SMR for the sets I previously mentioned would be a nice benchmark.

For what it's worth, SMR isn't even close to "real" prices for any 1955 Bowman common or minor star in PSA 8. In PSA 9, the entire SMR guide is worthless for 1955 Bowman. At some point a guidelines must be established, and, as always, it is highly qualified by things like a) population and b) bidding wars. SMR can provide a starting point, for sure.

  • For quite some time, the SMR has listed the values for PSA 8 and PSA 9 commons from 1975 Topps Mini.

I feel that all pre-81 sets should have commons listed in the SMR. In addition, I feel that Team Cards and Checklists should be listed seperately for all sets. These are not commons and they do consistently sell for above the price of commons. Within the past 6 months, the SMR has added seperate Team Card and Checklist pricing for many issues....but not for all of them.
