Digital Camera Help ... Nikon Coolpix 5400

I have a Nikon CoolPix 5400 that I really like, but I would like to take pics farther away from the coin so that I can light the coin better. I'm guessing I need some sort of telephoto lens for it.

I posted this issue on another forum, and was told that there are no telephoto lenses for this camera.

So I went to a review that said a telephoto lens is available.

The lens is "1.5x ED glass teleconverter (TC-E15ED)(174mm*)" whatever the heck that means, and I would need a "UR-E9 Converter Adapter" to attach it to my camera.

Here is a review of the lens: click here

Has anyone used this lens? Would this accomplish what I am looking for?

One thing I noticed in the review: The minimum camera-subject distance is about 90cm at 420mm. If the distance is shorter than this, the camera fails to focus. If you wish to get closer, you can use Nikon's high quality two-element, achromatic #5T (1.5) and #6T (2.9) close-up lenses, which have a thread size of 62mm, or use the reverse-mounting technique.

Does this mean that my camera must be at least 90 cm away from the coin?

An add-on macro lens will give you a little more working distance at normal coin photography mags.

I used to own one and bought a cheap macro adapter with lenses (throw the lenses away). The macro adapter for the 5400 screws onto the body. The one I got had a 52 mm thread (Not sure about the ones on Ebay at present). Go to B&H photo and get an appropriate macro lens (+4 will probably be OK) that will fit on the adapter.

You could play with the lenses that come with the adapter and see how much mag you need. they are stackable and additive. +1 and a +2 stacked = +3

No, that adapter won't give you any working distance, and that means that you need to be, at a minimum, 90cm away from the coin.

Unfortunately, I think you have found the limit of the CoolPix (and other digicams) when it comes to macro photography -- they don't provide enough working distance given their short lenses.

What's funny about add-on macro lenses is that they are supposed to give you more mag and they do. Typically they will decrease the working distance even more to ge that extra mag. What I found is that adding a lens allows you to use more zoom and the extra zoom allows you to move the camera farther away from the coin while keeping the original magnification.

If you do go this route can you post the results? i.e. without the new lens/adapters you were X away from the coin to fill the screen and with them you were Y away from the coin?

Thanks for the help from everyone!

I purchased some lenses off eBay. I'll post picks once I receive them.

Huh? 90 cm away and the coin can't be lit properly?! Wait while I get out my 1000W, 10,000K bulb...

    Enough working distance?!
