Ebay Thing I hate the most!

As I did my usual morning scan I noted something I have seen for several years now that really urks me.

Sellers use the word rare when selling thier coins this guy had a "Rare" 1964 canada dime. If it was so rare why was he selling like 4 of them.

Then we have the scarce word used in many of the same ways.

I know some poor ebay buyers that have no clue about coins have been disspointed in checking on their rare, scarce or over 208 years old coins.

I dont even want to bring up their coin grading methods, but i do wish they worked for ANACS or PCGS because I would have a 98% MS66-70 coin collection.

    Hey, I really believe
    that a few sellers
    are not out to deceive.

They simply haven't the slightest clue
    on what or
    what not to do.

A few are scarce or rare
but mostly not, so as Coffeyce
    wisely warns, beware!

  • "Unique" and "vintage" get quite the workout, too.

Also, don't you love it when the bidding starts
at 99 cents for the ULTRA-RARE item?

    Best to all!

  • And so RARE that they obviously didn't do a search to see the other 15 on there.
  • When I set up my saved searches, I specifically exclude listings with the word rare in the title for the very reasons you state. However, I do wish so very much that I could kick a few of those sellers in the groin!

The word "rare" today is just a catch word with little or no meaning on ebay.

I'm actually using the word "RARE" in the title of one of my Roman coin auctions.

But since it happens to be the only coin of that particular emperor up for auction on all of eBay, I think it qualifies. image

  • XXX Rare and XX Rare are keywords for me! I know that I get a lot of garbage by not filtering out these: But I know of a seller in Germany who regularly lists some pretty "common" stuff by availability. XXX is usually pretty right on as far as what I need in my collection. I have been collecting German coins by date and mint here in the US for over 30 years now and have most of the common stuff that was brought over by immigrants or Veterans. While some of this eBayers listings may say XXX Rare, the prices do not reflect this. I need many "rare" coins because in 30 years of searching I still do not have them. Krause may list many of these rare coins under a buck in Fine which is the grade I am trying to complete this set in (I have lowered my sights from VF). This is an eBay seller who knows what is common or not so common or even hard to find. A mintage of under a hundred thousand pieces in US coinage will make a coin uber expensive but only a semi uncommon coin worth a slight premium in the German stuff that I have taken to collecting. PM me with any coin you have available in Fine or better... Even if I have it, it may be an upgrade, as I do have some fillers just because I can't find anything in Fine or better where I have been buying my coins!
