Thats a pretty nice little coin. I have like two or three I have gotten in world coin lots. Reminds me of the bird on the farthing.

I completed the full run of both New Zealand 1/2-Penny & Penny coins in Whitman blue folders a short while ago - - they ARE neat!!image

I like the size of those big coppers - fun series. I've got about 2/3rds of the Aussie set done, missing a handfull of mostly keys...

NZ pre-decimal coppers from the 1940's are exceedingly difficult to find in BU condition, particularly in full red. This date is probably one of the easiest since it was a first year issue and was widely saved in mint sets.

  • Wayne,
Being from New Zealand,I can tell you that the 1949 1d. is an extremely common coin in that grade.

    FilamCoins,
That is one extremely nice 1940 1d. that you've got there.Even I never see anything in the top grades for any date for the 1d.,apart from 1964 & 1965 (which was never issued as a currency coin).

The bird on the reverse is called the Tui.It is also known as the Parsonbird, because of the white tufts of feathers on the bird's throat.

  • I think a bunch of the modern dollars have some very nice designs - anyone collect these? I thought about it, but have decided against it in favor or some other tasks. Maybe some day I'll pick up the "bird" collection again.

  • Bob,
Although you have got a nice Proof silver $1 medal-coin,I can tell you that they are not very popular with New Zealand numismatists, because there are far too many medal-coins being churned out,& offered at exorbitant prices at New Zealand Post.

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand no longer has any responsibility for marketing the medal-coins.
