It is indeed. That's one I never had!

If you had posted that one month ago, before I made the decision to sell my Roman collection, I'd have been clamoring to buy that from you.

Laelianus was a usurper and rates R-7 on the DOC rarity scale (7 on a scale of 1-9, that is, with 9 being the rarest). R-7 was as high as I would go for my set, on my budget- I didn't even try to find R-8 or R-9 coins.

Wildwinds.com is a great site to use for making a preliminary attribution of the coin. They have it all sorted by emperor names, and it'll give you a wealth of information on just about any Roman Imperial coin.

  • Does anyone "slab" such coins?

ICG does. Their opinions aren't regarded too good in the ancients collecting fraternity. They've also been known to mis-identify and mis-authenticate a bit too often.

NGC apparently only do it as a favour to their high-volume customers.

The specialist "ancients grading and authentication service" is David Sear's ACCS - they don't slab the coins, but their opinions are more highly regarded by your typical ancients collector than any of the mainstream TPGs.

It's pretty obviously authentic from the photos. You shouldn't need to slab it.

ICG is out of the ancient coin slabbing business for the time being, as I last heard (from an ex-employee most of us know).
