1844 Jersey

Any info on this coin please? I don't have my older Krause with me.

Also look at the denomination............It appears to look like 1/26th which I am pretty sure was not a demonination. Maybe a minting flaw?

Here is my example for comparison Wayne. 1/26 is correct.

  • The coin is 1/26 th of a shilling , the channel islands currency was not quite on parr with the UKs hence the odd values.

  • Thanks a lot guys! I was thinking along the line of 1/20th...........which is strange of me. I posted a pic of a 1/12th a few days ago.

    Thanks again.
edit to add: That coin of your's Boz is in so much better condition than the one I have..............mine is very very dark and a lot of dings.......it does look like the photo.image

  • Wayne,
I've got a few of these. The strangely-denominated coins ceased in 1877,when the Jersey Pound was made equal to the Pound Sterling, which is still the case today.

    Aidan.

  • I forgot to thank Tony for the info.....thanks.

Guess this would make my poor Vicky worth maybe $1.25.......................IF it was for sell and it is NOTimage

Its very nice for $1.25. Sometimes the cheaper valued coins are nicer than the rares.

  • There were 13 Jersey pence to a shilling until 1877. In 1877 the ratio was made equivalent to the standard British 12 pence to a shilling.
So 1/26 was a half penny, etc.
And 1/13, 1/24 and 1/12 shilling coins were also made.

Always liked those. Jersey, and Guernsey, too. The seemingly oddball denominations make 'em all the more appealing.
