Many fakes of these around. I don't know if yours is one or not. Hopefully not. I like these coins a lot.

That coin is definately worth slabbing - way too many fakes and real ones are few and far between.

  • I took your photo, turned the rev over, guessed at the brightnes and combined into one photo.
    Hope you don't mind

These really is an interesting coin. I take the depcition of the car to be a declaration of modernity. Is that the case? Why choose a car for a coin?

    Is that a Buick?

That's a serious question. Because Chinese elites owned Buicks early in the 20th Century, Buicks have quite a reputation there, and GM is now selling more Buicks in China than in the US.

According to Krause, the subject is :First road in Kweichow and it is known as the Auto Dollar as it purports to portray the governor's automobile.

Too bad I can't see Photobucket photos from my work PC. image

Even though I can't see your coin, I'm envious. I've wanted one of those to add to my Chinese "silver dollar" collection, but not enough to pay the $800+ price tags I've seen on nice VF and better specimens.

I'd really like to get one of them as well...but can't see spending that kind of money on a coin! I have been a car collector of all sorts for years (decades, actually) and would like to have that one.

As mentioned, there are so many fakes of these out there I wouldn't touch one with a 30-foot pole.

However, since you already own it, good luck on the submission, and may it come back in plastic as the Real McCoy!

  • the coin seems to weigh 27 grams.
  • Heritage auctioned one similar to yours last August for $977. In the same auction a PCGS VF35 sold for $2,300.

Doesn't really look authentic in the photos, but these really can't be authenticated from photos. If it's truly 27 grams then it's definitely bogus.

Double check the weight with a scale that measures to the hundredth of a gram. These can weigh into the low 26s, but 27 I think is definitely outside the range.

  • So could this coin I have still be genuine? Several people assured coin weight is 25.5+ area but now some coin book says 26.5. Not looking good for my coin!!
  • Read what CIVITAS posted above.

It could certainly still be genuine, but you'll need at the very least an accurate weight. If you have a local coin dealer you frequent, ask him to weigh it for you and get an accurate measurement to the hundredth of a gram. It'll go a long way.

To remove any doubt, send it to NCS or ANACS. It would be worth the $30-$40 to know for sure.
