More poppage, autographed 89 UD Griffey RC...

I've had this card since I was a kid. In 1990, Griffey Jr and his dad were doing a show at the local Howard Johnson. The folks putting on the show had a stack of several hundred 89 UD Griffey's that they were blowing out at $7 each. I brought my own, money for an autograph ticket, and an extra $60 that I was bent on using to buy 2 boxes of 1990 Upper Deck (sigh). Well, I got my Giff auto'ed and shook his hand, then went into the card show and found a few boxes of 90 UD for $20 each. I used the extra $20 to pick up some loose cards here and there.

Jr's auto has gotten a lot prettier over time. In 1990, it looked like this.

Well, the Giff has been sitting in my collection for all these years, and for some reason, I decided to go ahead and pack it up with my last minute August special submission and get it graded/authenticated.

Line # Item # Cert # Grade Description Type Country
1 1 14014664 MINT 9 1989 UPPER DECK 1 KEN GRIFFEY JR. PSA/DNA CERTIFIED Card US
Total Items: 1
Date Received: 8/26/2008
Date Shipped: N/A
Order Status: OK

The 9's a good grade for it. I didn't think it'd pull a 10. I was more worried about Griffey's sloppy auto being rejected as a fake.

    RIP GURU
  • Congrats on the grade. It is a shame Griffey auto's are so tough to come by these days outside of UD product.
  • Cool card. I have one too, minus the auto image

Theis was THE card to have when I first got into the hobby in 1989. It also looked a lot better than his other rookies, so I figured I'd get it signed when I went to the show. I think they charged $15 per item you wanted signed.

I pulled the Griffey from a pack in 1989 too. image

Benito was awesome, even though he was juicing. I can't listen to Zito games, too much pain. The "Youth Movement" is exciting though. I hope it works!

    Nice card!

I think this is one of the times where the authentication used common sense - if it looks close to his sig - it's gonna get the benefit of the doubt - they figure - who would fake an auto on a card that's in that kind of shape?

I have a bat with his sig and it's also very sloppy - it's never been authenticated - a friend got it in person - would be funny if they said it was fake!

Superb - thanx for sharing. I always enjoy your stuff.
