Thanks STONE, as I have never seen an online digital image that was so bothersome to glance at! image

Yes, the coin does look like that in-hand which does make you question PCGS' judgment.....but on the other hand, S.African coins have a tendency to go nuclear, so perhaps PCGS got it right.

Nuclear is a good term for this! image

  • i have a 1 gallon zip-lock bag half full of SA coins that have toning similar to that - all of them pulled from original proof sets - that coin is not baked nor is it messed with. Don't know what it is about the process that the SA mint uses, but they get some spectacular toning in thier proof sets (and in some of the mint sets as well).

  • Looks NT to me. Negatively toned that is.

Where do you put the batteries in?
Witty sig line currently under construction. Thank you for your patience.

  • The coin in question is NT. So it is clear that you are not a toned coin fan. So it's you. image

I have several of those in my 10c bulk bin, just without the toning.

280 bucks? Ow. That's what hurts.

Sorry, MrD- more power to you, but that's madness in my book. A ten-cent coin with spectacular toning does not become a 280-dollar coin to me, no matter what. It might become a five- or six- or eight-dollar coin, but that's about as far as I personally will go.

    But to each his own.

Edit to add- I do think it's pretty. And I won't argue it being NT. I'll grant that much.

You know, his BST post makes one very good point.

Maybe I should think about sending some stuff to him, and riding the crazy toning train for all it's worth.

Crazy it is, but if he's getting moon money like that (that is PLUTO money for a coin like that), then OK, he has my attention.

Bought a Bavarian Goetz pattern from him once, and it was nice. Maybe it's time to cash in some otherwise-inexpensive Darkside toners.

Funny how this toning craze seems to conquer any aversion people have towards the Darkside. It's like paint fumes gone to their brains.

That does it. I will be looking for toners in my bulk material, and he'll be hearing from me if I find any.

Here is one that makes me cringe, wince and protect my face, all at the same time. NGC AU-58.

    image

It's probably priced fairly; i'm not knocking the company selling it. These coins do exist and someone somewhere will love it.

It's just that...in the wide spectrum of things that are 58...I think one can find something that has more eye appeal. This one is for the collector of 'various 58s'.

I'll say one thing, it's a coin with luster. It's just that the luster is stark and bright and helps to 'cut at your eyes'... image
