Single player/team collectors

A good friend of mine decided to focus his collection on his favorite team, the SF Giants, and has been selling off the other parts of his collection.

This made me wonder if the board members who are single player or team collectors sold off the remainder of their collections when they decided to focus on one player or team.

Thanks in advance.

No, always been a set collector and player collector. Some of my foci evolve, some have never waivered. My Thomas collection has always been my baby, but it's a childhood collection that I've continued for nearly 2 decades.

I have not sold off the rest of my collection to do it - but I collect all 1970's Red Sox PSA graded team sets. When I finish with those, I imagine I'll get right into the 1960's. Heck, I did a Yaz player set, so except low pop commons, I'll already have the biggest card in each set presumably. Team sets are fun!!!
  • All Andy Van Slyke, vintage Pirates & Steelers, and minimum PSA9 1989 Score football. But, did not sell anything to support my habit.

I collect "for keeps" only Ripkens, and I buy and resell everything else just for fun and to support my Ripken habit. So to answer your question, yes I sold my entire collection to support my single player collection.
  • I started as a team collector therefore I didn't have anything else to sell off. I do submit star cards with my common cards then sell the star cards to recoup some of my grading fees. I think it is kind of funny when I get a both a 1986 Topps Cal Ripken and a 1986 Topps Brian Downing in a PSA 10 and sell the Ripken card. Seems kind of backwards but this is a hobby for me.

I have my focus in about 4 areas.

The main part of my collection is my Cardinals team sets. They are raw and in albums. I started in 2002 just wanting to get all Topps. After that, I branched out. I now have 1951 to present Topps, 1948 to present Bowman, all Fleer, all Donruss, all Upper Deck, all Score, many vintage and modern Topps inserts and test issues, plus many vintage misc like Red Man, Post, Jello, Berk Ross, Kellogg's, Hostess, etc. I have 16 albums full of nothing but Cardinals team sets.

Since my Cardinals team sets are almost at a stand still (because of the rare ones that I need), I have branched out a little. I started doing through the mail (TTM) autographs and all of my Topps duplicate cards. I now have over 660 different Topps Cardinals signatures.

I also have complete Topps sets down to my birth year of 1975 that is obvisously ongoing every year.

One last thing that I am working on (though it goes slowly and in spurts) is a very poor 1952 Topps Set. I have (I think) 265 different cards collected. It will probably take me 20 years, but I hope to get there.

  • I collect Clemente cards and have sold off many other parts of my collection to help fund it. Once I got pretty far along in that I branched off into exhibits and I have continued to sell off the rest of my cards not concentrated in these areas.
  • I guess I have too many collections. I collect Steve Young items including oddball and graded, there are a few players I only collect graded, and there are a few dozen sets I am working on.
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards.
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.

I focus on many different areas and all High Grade PSA 10 and BGS 9.5 cards for modern ERA cards and PSA 6+ cards for the 1950's-1960's.

    1. 1986-87 Fleer Basketball PSA registry set (just started it)
    A. 1987-88 Fleer Basketball PSA registry set (complete at 9.16 GPA, but upgrading now to PSA 10's)

    2. Football (Payton, Montana, Rice, Favre (SC) and Emmitt Smith (Score) RC's) PSA 9's on the Montana, Payton and Rice, Looking PSA 10's on Favre and Emmitt Smith--PSAAL keeps buying all the damn Favre PSA 10 1992 Stadium Club cards.

    3. Baseball is my true labor of love, collecting generally just the 1 or two (Pujols/Arod) key RC's of the following MODERN ERA players:

    Modern:
    1. David Wright
    2. Ichiro
    3. Ryan Braun
    4. Arod
    5. Pujols
    6. Ripken

I am currently all current 1970-79 HOF RC's in PSA 9 or better grade.

1960's HOF'ers in PSA 8 or better grade.

    Carl Yaz
    Ryan
    Bench
    Reggie Jackson
    Joe Morgan
    Steve Carlton
    Tom Seaver

1950's HOF'ers in PSA 6 or better grade.
    Ernie Banks
    Hank Aaron
    Harmon Killebrew
    Bob Gibson
    Roberto Clemente
    Sandy Koufax

  • Thanks for the input. I have been thinking about limiting my buying to Aaron, Clemente, Koufax and Mantle in baseball. I would have to sell off most of my stuff to do it in NM though! Something to think about that is for sure. Good luck to you all in your collecting pursuits.

Just sub Aikman, Irvin and Smith for Ripken and this is what I did as well. I just don't care about any other cards or players anymore.
