Do you insure your collection and how?

I'm looking for information regarding the best method to insure my collection.

I received a quote for a rider to my homeowners policy that was absolutely obscene. On a separate note, the PSA site has an ad from Collectibles Insurance Services LLC. The estimate seemed reasonable. Does anyone use them?

What was the estimate you received? Is it a percentage of your collection value or just a flat number?
  • I have been using Collectibles Insurance for over a year, they have been fine (granted no claims thou) and their policy was thru the Hartford, not some rinky dink firm. I think I paid $155 for $35,000 in coverage.

We pay $600 a year per $100,000 coverage.

  • A special endorsement on your homeowners policy usually will cost you almost as much as the policy itself. Usually not a viable option.

Has anyone actually filed a claim with any of them? If so, what were the results?
  • I pay $89 for $100,000 on my Homeowners Policy (Liberty Mutual). They are one of the few insurance companies other than Collectibles Ins. (also very good) who specifically insure fine arts and collectibles at a reasonable cost. All I have to do is send an updated list of my collectibles, a link to my PSA registry sets, and a list of my unlisted (raw or non-PSA reg. cards) with the estimated value (I use SMR, VCP and SCM to est. value) to my agent. The caveat is they have a $100,000 ceiling so if your collection is worth more than this, you would need to consider CIS to supplement your homeowners policy.

  • I'm looking into a third party insurance. My house was burglarized this year and my home owners policy only covered up to $1000 for my sports cards (I lost over 10k), and I lost my Golden Age/Silver Age comics as well (but the insurance company didn't have a cap on comics, so I was finally reimbursed FMV for my comics at over 80k).
