Can Pop 1 Coins Really Last -1- Day Honestly?? Read This

Well, I put on my "collector hat" and am assembling a nice Commem set (see the scan of my pretty commem I posted on the boards yesterday). I graded a "pop 1" 1952 Washington Carver this week and really thought I had something cool to start my 144 piece set!! Well, last night I get a very friendly email from Ms. Laura from Legend (who read my post), basically asking me how the coin on her desk that just came in before she called it a day on Friday could be the very coin I graded and is in my new set!! I said "What"!! I shot her off the complete scans of my coin, including the serial number part of the holder and Laura quickly confirmed that this pop -0- coin for nearly 15 years became a pop -2- in one day!!! I had turned down a large sum of money on Friday to retain this coin in my new set and Laura obviously paid a large sum of money on Friday to buy her "pop 1" coin.

Talk about a NY state quarter in PCGS-MS69 only lasting 3 weeks as a pop 1. My first experience as a COLLECTOR of these classic commems resulted in my pop 1 (which took 15 years to make!!) lasting 1 day!!!!!! image Wondercoin.

P.S. Since Laura thought my coin was her "twin" and she thinks her coin is one of the nicest toned commems she has EVER seen, I told her (using what I learned in my Philosophy class) that speaks well for my coin image

  • Well, it's nice to know that everyone gets bitten occasionally by the population reports. image

It would be nice if these things could get updated more frequently. There should be no reason that the grades should be added to the online database as soon as the coins make it past the finalizer and before the coins are shipped out the door.

  • """""Just goes to show you how "dangerous" it can be buying condition rarity""""""""

i am not trying to be snooty here but i couldn't disagree more with this statement for 2 reasons

    1) you dot know what the price of the coins are

    2) you haven't examined them to see what the quality is

fact is if you know what your doing it is quite rewarding and profitable to boot!

i have examined legend`s personally......and if you believe in the following sentences then you will be able to conclude legend has a truly remarkable monster coin which is worth 5 figures

if you believe that the registry set program ranks coins according to grades to find out who has the best sets and praise them for it then you are right....however the grading services who grades coins use a dynamic scale which is not etched in stone ...meaning the old school of grading which is 40% surface preservation, 20% luster, 20% strike and 20% eye appeal is slowly changing and will continue to do so....whats happening is ....of the 100% ....... eye appeal is gaining at the other parameters expense...why ...simple...because thats what the market wants and will pay for....legend is at the cutting edge of this change and i too have recognized it for many years now ( all i collect is monsters).....thus i can tell you that the MONSTER legend has now ....is and forever will be one of the top w/c in existence and if the pop goes to 5 or 10 in 10 years then the legend coin will have to be sent in again for grading where it will then be graded ms 68 and once again show the world its superiority

    gregg

ps i have a couple commems graded ms 69 ( as well as 22 graded 68 ) which were not always ms 69 but they always where in a class by themselves 25 years ago ....and as they were the highest graded 17 years ago and in a class by themselves when slabs started ( no commem was ever graded 67 back then).... today they are ms 69.......you see monsters will always be monsters and there are VERY few unknown coins out there today.......so you see ...look for the legend coin to be a ms 68 some time in the future further distancing itself from the rest ......hope this helps you all!!!!

my goal is to find the monsters and i go where they are but i sometimes miss some.... so if you have any and want to sell IM THE BUYER FOR THEM!!!

Gregg: PLEASE NOT THE QUARTER!! You are torturing me!! One of the tuly great MS68 quarters in the world today! By the way, I slabbed a really beautiful 1948(p) quarter this week in PCGS-MS68. Green, red, pink. Mark-free. 5 years trying to make a PCGS-MS68 quarter for me. They have only graded -5- regular issue MS68 pieces in 15 years. image

Great to see you online, even though you only allowed me to have a "one day pop 1 party" for my 1952 Wash Carver piece. image Wondercoin.

  • just so you know i bought that 1949 quarter out of a original group of unopened mint sets that were sent to max mehl ( with his name and address on the outside of the envelope sent to him from the mint)and i bought the right to first pick of the first 2 coins in the 20 sets...i paid stupid money to do so but as it turned out i didnt as this quarter is worth much more than i paid not to mention the drop dead 1947 walker......thank god for pink and green tissue paper the mint used as seperaters

tell me how to pull some pics off of my files and ill stick in some more...the one i sent is a jpg and you click on it ....tour w/c just shows up ..how do you do that

    Hi Gregg-

We have met before at major shows and have a number of mutual friends, however, I realize that you have no clue as to whom I am. Don't worry, I don't mind. That quarter is AWESOME!!!image I have heard of the coin before and had always wanted to see an image so this was a real treat! If you want the "glasses" icon simply click on "profile" from the tool bar above and go to "profile visibility" and check it off. In that way people can read your profile. To insert an image into the body of your text click on the picture frame icon above the text of a reply, it is the fourth icon, and paste in the URL. To set up a link to images stored on-line click on the fifth icon (next to the image icon) and paste in the URL. Welcome!image

  • thanks tom on the help....ill give it a try ...i hope you like what you see!!

larry......i built the nfl set over a long period of years using only 4 sources....they were jack lee....kenny duncan.....bill spears and legend coin

my jack lee connection was heavily intigrated with kenny duncan where kenny and his associates ( and he has some stud graders working for him not to mention his ability) would comb the floor for very high end PQ dollars.... if they got upgraded they went to jack lee....if they didnt they went to me...i loved my postion......gee ALL PQ TOP QUALITY COINS....yeah i paid a high premium for them but they were all the next grade up.....now you see why mike bob of mike`s coin chest wouldnt take my 100,000 challenge where we both put up 50,000 and we submitted bob dyers set ( mike bob built it for bob dyer)and mine to pcgs and the set that did the best with the grades won the 100,000....you see i smoked him on the bourse floor...i did it with my contacts..just out and out smoked him...he doesnt know it ( but you can tell mike bob now ) he never saw a coin i didnt see first and passed on.......as you can see by the registry that bob dyers set is ranked ahead of mine but mine had all break out coins and his were just made its ( thus if resubmitted could down grade)....one of the bigger buyers at my auction has already had 12 upgrades some of which were 20,000 dollar hits for him not to mention i could of sold my 92-s in 67 and put in a 65 like his .....upgraded all my wonder 65 and 66 generics to 67 and gained 18 points and passed him and put 50,000 in my pocket to boot...which doesnt speak too well for how the registry system worked then...BOO DAVID HALL as my 92-s in 67 had the same effect as his 86-p in 67.....a mere 135,000 diference in value not to mention finding one....the proof of the whole thing was at FUN 2001 when i was selling my set he had bob dyers set for sale intact until 1-23-01 ( as the sign in his case indicated )...after lot viewing in which he saw the quality of my coins all together in one place.... he panicked....ran out to his case ripped up the sign saying until 1-23-01 and began to solicit the buyers who came into town for my auction.....he sucked 300,000 worth of cash out of the bidders....yeah i wasnt happy but what can you do...besides several of my coins brought multiples of bid.....i made a very handsome profit...i had a blast doing it......they were all sold...and most importantly i smoke all the competion....heck mike bob still to this day has some of those coins of bob dyers....why...because they were just "made its"
    .....................................

.....................................now you know the rest of the story!!!

    paul harvey.....good day

ps your 21-d...came from jack lee....and what a monster it is too....fact is about 10 years ago jack had 3 monster 66 21-d come his way i asked him what the deal with them....he said " gregg..i think they are all 67 and im going to sennd em in once a year until one of them gets graded 67....and when that happens you get first shot at either of the other two"....2 years later jack sent me both 66s to pick from...and the one you have is the one i picked...it is from the creme de la creme

Hey Mitch, I would place my CS skills with anyone here. I'm hurt, who else here actually hosts their websites on computers in their house.

I was wondering when you would show up!
If It doesn't have great eye appeal, I don't want it.

Need to add that you should visit the US Coin Board, where you can be formally introduced to IWOG.image

Outstanding coin, image and link. I don't think you'll need any assistance posting pics at all. That '49 Washington is psychedelic. Hey, maybe since the term "monster" is being so over-used, such coins can be described as "psychedelic".image
