Opinions wanted please

Hello all:

I am coming here for the sports card message boards with some help needed.

My father in law has collected coins since about 1940. I asked him about the coins he thought were most valuable. He went by his trusty price guide and came up with these.

Are any of these coins worth being slabbed in your opinion. There are 2 double struck, a 55 and a 72 and a 1922 with no mint mark. The link eo all the coins is here:

Here are the scans of the fronts of all the coins. Please let me know what you think.

Very cool group. The 1877, 1922, 1955 and 1972 cents are worth getting slabbed for sure. The gold too. Mostly just to verify authenticity to future buyers. If you have no plans on selling, probably no need to slab. But slabbing would keep them protected too. Others here will be able to go into more detail on the rest of them. If you want estimates of grade/value, you'll need clear large pics of both the obverse and reverse. Thanks for sharing!

    For sure.

The Columbian half and 10 cent note probably not. That gold probably not unless it has a mint mark. We'd need to see the reverses to have a better idea.

The 55 Double die looks like it may have some active pvc around the date.I'd definately get that stopped asap.

    An acetone bath.
I also agree with getting this coin some help.
Slabbing the 55 DDO for authenticity and protection is also a great idea.
Slabbing or putting the 72 DDO in an airtight will also help keep its Red color.
I would do the same for the 1877.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

Very nice group. The 1875 dime and the Columbian half dollar might have a modest enough value that slabbing them could be a waste of money. The rest includes some better pieces, though, and on the 1955 Doubled Die cent, the 1877 Indian cent, and the gold piece, slabbing would definitely be the way to go, to reassure your potential buyers of their authenticity.

Should he be contemplating the sale of these coins, I would be very interested in this one. It has the "look" I have been seeking.

Yes the 1877 ihc, 55 and 72 lincoln and the gold are all worth having slabbed. And as others have mentioned the 55 needs to soak in acetone for a bit to remove and stop the pvc damage. The others are not really worth the fees from what I can see.

    Thanks for the opinions all.

As for soaking the 55 in acetone, I should just let is soak for 15 minutes and then take it out and air dry?

As for the grading fees (PCGS). I looked into it a little and was completely confused about what it should cost to have these slabbed.

I believe I have to join at a minimum of $49 to be able to submit coins.
The Double Die coings would be "Mint Errors" @ $40 ea.
The 1887 and the 1922 at $18 or $30 depending on speed of service.
    THe $5 gold piece $40

Am I on the right trace here?

    Thanks again,

    Jon
