What's gold, 33.2mm in diameter, and exactly 1 troy oz?

Sorry, I don't know the answer. I'm hoping this will ring a bell with someone else.

A few months ago I purchased a gold type II planchet, 33.2 mm, 1.01 troy ounces. The previous owner tested it to 22+ karat, and since it weighs pretty much exactly one troy ounce on my uncalibrated scale, I assume its actually .999 fine.

It came with a tag from a 1982 auction, so that would eliminate most of the more-modern possibilities. I can't come up with any other good possibilities. Since this is a blank planchet, it should be a tad smaller than the finished piece.

So I'm looking to identify a 1 ounce gold coin or medal produced in 1982 or earlier, with a diameter of about 33.3 mm.

Can anyone come up with a candidate?

(I'm cross-posting to the world forum also, since that's a likely as not.)

(I'm also posting pics because someone is going to ask for them if I don't, even though there's not a whole lot to look at...)

If it is .999 then I doubt it's a US Mint product (only recently did they produce .999 material).

Here are some candidates from the US Mint American Arts Medals series (they're all .900 pure one ounce gold medals):

    1980 Grant Wood

    1981 Mark Twain

    1982 Louis Armstrong

doubt if a pre-82 is gonna be .999, if it's not foreign, i would guess that it's a St. Gaudens planchet (±516 grains, ±33.4 grams).

I forgot to say that I'd ruled out the American Arts pieces, since their struck diameter is narrower than 33.2. Unfortunately, I can't quickly find their diameter now that I'm looking for it again. image

A Saint Gaudens planchet would be amazing, but my guess is that I'm not that lucky. This planchet is 1.01 troy ounces = 31.4 grams, or more than 2 grams light for a $20 gold piece.

if the previous owner tested it to be 22karat...then that's more inline with gold coinage pre modern

why do you "assume" its .999

Could it be a Krugerrand? 22K fits with the Krands as does the time frame. No idea what their diameters are/were though.

Krugerrands are 32.69mm in diameter, which is pretty close. It might fit the bill if the planchet hasn't been upset.
