Anybody buy cards from the "finish your sets" auctions on Ebay?

I finally got my 1978 Topps baseball starter set sorted to see what cards I need, I am still missing around 400 cards so I checked Ebay just to see what they had for lots and what they were going for. I came across a few "finish your set" lots where, if you win, you get to pick from a list of cards to get the ones you need, has anybody finished their sets this way?
I would be lucky if the cards I have in my starter set would make 5's or 6's, so I am not going for high grade, just looking to complete my first 70's set.

I know they were, but for as many as I've seen on there lately, I was wondering if they are letting them go now.

I checked it out, the commons on there are $.15 each, if I need 400 cards, that comes to $60 without shipping and I'm sure some of the ones I need are stars or semistars which would be quite a bit more. With what I have into it so far, I would have over $150 in a set that wouldn't even be classified as good-very good.
  • I don't remember if it was 2006 or 2007, but I bid on a "pick X many cards" auction for Allen & Ginter cards one year and the transaction was very positive. If I recall correctly, the list was mostly commons but a few SPs too. I didn't get greedy and picked out, I think, about 25 commons and 5 SPs. Pretty sure the total paid out was around $8 + shipping. Not unfair at all.

Of course, that was modern stuff... and I have no idea what shenanegans could happen in an auction like that for earlier issues.

If it's against eBay policy, people have been doing it for a long time without getting ganked by the TOS police.

I think they get around it by making the auction for 10 cards, which are listed. Then you have the option of substituting from a second list of available cards.

I've bought a few of these, it all depends on the seller. If you get a seller that grades accurately, you will go back as long as the price is right!

Some of them also will let you add additional cards at the same per card price as the original auction closing price, if you ask before paying.

That just looks like a search engine to me. Am I missing something?
