couple more years for this kid's Bowman Chrome rookie

  • Isn't there an 11-12 year old league up there? I mean, a 9 year old playing a league like that isn't completely out of the question. I ump little league baseball for a summer job and it's not uncommon to see younger guys playing up in age if the league allows it. It'd take some of the spotlight off of him by not being the best on the team as well as make him better whenever he got the chance to pitch.
  • And he's 10 minutes from my house. I'm sure I'll be hearing about him a lot more in the future unless they burn the poor kid out. Times sure have changed with the way youth sports is handled today.

    What's happened to this country??!?

I faced kids that threw that fast in Little League. Parents today need to be shot. The best thing that could happen to some of those kids is to get hit in the back with a hard fastball. It will teach them that it won't hurt that bad and not to step in the bucket.

And the director of the league says that it's a developmental league to promote the game? Then why have playoffs you moron!

This nation is turning into a nation of wimps. Kids are being prevented from facing adversity of any kind. Its a bad precedent. They need to learn to fail, learn to get hurt, learn how to handle bad grades. The real world is mean and unfair, but kids today are being prevented from experiencing that. Its going to be even harder and more traumatic on them in the future. And its only going to get worse as these kids become parents.

I'll bet anyone any amount of money that this kid never plays in the bigs. Maybe not even the minor leagues. Maybe not even his senior year in HS

Sounds like the league is pretty weak in my opinion. I have coached for 7 years and each year there are always two or three boys that stand out like this kid. You move them up into a higher age group and stop playing down in recreational ball and you won't have that problem. Nothing worse than being the worst on the team or the best in the league. No one benefits.

  • My son is 9 and consistently throws 40 MPH. Should I conatact ESPN? According to the Little League translation that is the same as a major leaguer throwing it 102 MPH.
  • When I was in Little League we had a couple of pitchers who could consistently throw that fast. One had a 95MPH fastball as a freshman, but blew his arm out shortly after graduating.

"He is a very skilled player, a very hard thrower," Noble said. "There are a lot of beginners. This is not a high-powered league. This is a developmental league whose main purpose is to promote the sport."

Noble acknowledged that Jericho had not beaned any batters in the co-ed league of 8- to 10-year-olds, but say parents expressed safety concerns.

"Facing that kind of speed" is frightening for beginning players", Noble said.
