1794 Bath token......Is this a normal planchet?

Looks very thin to me, maybe they are supposed to be?

Seems thiner than my other Conder tokens.
What do you think?

  • Hi Stefanie

I don't know if this is news to you, but there are at least two different types of this token - one with edge inscription, and one with plain edge, like yours.

I don't know why the flan on your token is thinner than usual. It could be a contemporary counterfeit, or perhaps they screwed up at the mint and made to thin flans, and then decided to procede with the production and drop the edge inscription?

There's an emai l adress to the seller of the token in my link. Maybe you can ask him?

Look very carefully to see if maybe it was overstruck on a coin? I think that happened sometimes. I know it did with other series, if not Conders. Could be they had some coins of the right diameter, if not thickness, and overstruck 'em? If so, you might be able to see ghostly traces of the host coin in some areas.

Just one possible explanation. Maybe not the correct one. I can't see any irregularities in the pictures.

Thanks again, but I couldn't find the weight?

  • Hi, Stefanie ~

D&H offers no guidance on weight, but does state: "On large and small flans."
I have a couple of these that are all standard 1/2d size & thickness, so maybe
yours is the small flan variety?

BTW, it's Somerset/Bath D&H 26, in case you need that.

    Best to all ~
    Tom

P.S. I guess this is what I meant to put in the previous post...sorry.

I concur with Daltonista, this halfpenny token comes with several edge varieties in addition to the plain edge. The plain edge variety was struck without a collar, which, combined with a small flan could account for the relative thinness of yours. D&H only state that these were struck on large and small flans, which I would interpret as referring to diameter, not thickness. Of course, it just could have begun life as a thiner than normal flan.

You should also ask Conder101 across the street on his views.
