Elephants on coins, I like.

Elephants in the living room or anywhere besides behind a wall at the zoo, I'm not so sure about.

Actually, I used to live where there were free-range elephants, but we saw more giraffe by the side of the road than pachyderms.

What's that hexagonal coin with the elephant? Belgian Congo? I really like that one. (And the Caesar ones above, too, of course.)

One day I was parked on the side of a road in Chiangmai, Thailand waiting for my then wife to return a video. I'm just sitting in the car chillin', as much as one can chill in the oppressive Thai weather, when all of a sudden an elephant and its manhout can walking down the street and right by the car. It scared the heck out of me. Even though this was an Asian elephant the things are still quite large and one doesn't really expect to see one walking down a main street in Thailand's second largest city.

We had big tusky ones in East Africa, as I recall.

But one usually didn't see them where I lived. Giraffe and hyenas and Cape Buffalo, yes.

BTW, I don't think I have any elephants except some Somalian coins I lack pictures of.

I had an 1815 Ceylon 1-stiver with George III and an elephant from one of your lots, Don. Aethelred bought it from me but it was only about a $3 coin. He said something like, "George III and an elephant, now there's a combination I can't pass up," and I agreed, though it was hardly a handsome combination.

Kempson's Coventry tokens have a nice depiction of an elephant although it's clear the engraver
had never seen an elephant's feet!

Oh, wow. I never would have noticed the funky feet on that Elephant if you hadn't pointed them out. Cool.

I thought of those Conders and wondered how long it would take somebody to post one.

Baktria and IndoGreek are a renewed interest after working thru the Holt and Kritt books recently. A number of these feature elephants, including elephant headresses. Here's a drachm of Antialcidas with unusually nice style that came today. I'm still using just scans so the color isn't quite right, esp on the obverse.
