I've missed me some high school football

Not sure if your schools have started, but our local high school opened on the road tonight. We're down 7-0 at the half, which isn't terrible considering that they went winless last year.

  • Our practices have been wiped out this week (except monday) due to the storm, but our season still starts next Friday night. We have some tough competition (all FL football is competitive) all year and only a few games that we "should win", so it should be interesting to see how our season pans out.

In our third game we play Titusville who has a 6'4" receiver with a 4.3 40 yd dash time and is a 4 star recruit and will be attending FSU in the fall on a full football scholarship. I've gone up against QB's that are at Rutgers, FBs at Miami, OTs at Tennesse, and plenty of other D1 guys but never a TOP wide receiver. I was back up Corner last year........I'm not so lucky this year image

I'll probably update this thread after some of our games. I only say some because I'm not so sure I want everyone to know the scores of some of our games against the best in the state......

    ha ha, good times.

Rough start. Our starting QB threw 3 picks, the backup came in and threw one himself. 21 points off turnovers and we're down 21-0. On top of this, our star RB who is being looked at by Georgia only had 4 carries before coming out of the game.

On the other hand, I get to do the announcing for our Junior High team (as well as the high school). They're 2-0 on the season, including a 30-6 win over our cross county rival last night.
  • 23-0 the final. I'm curious if some folks may try to start a QB controversy. Tough way to start the year but at least it wasn't a regional game.

  • Down at Satellite High in Brevard. We don't play Seabreeze but we play schools like Palm Bay, Titusville, Melbourne, Cocoa, Astronaut, Rockledge, Merritt Island etc. That schedule's pretty much the reason we only win a few games a year.

How are Seabreeze and Mainland (sorry for asking image) looking this year? Another year in the state title hunt?

You know it,mainland is looking strong as ever.Seabreeze lost a few to seniors but
should still contend.Mainland just reproduces stars every year, vince carter just dropped 5 million
on a state of art weightlifting equipment, guess there trying to catch spruce creek.
Good luck this season!I'll be taking my son to north brevard and south brevard for pop warner
mighty mites this year, looking for a little revenge from last years shutout.

Unreal opening night at home. After not winning a game since 2006 the team jumped out to a 14-0 lead at the half. In the second half we were outscored 19-0 to go down 19-14 with under 4:00 to play. The home team got it together and scored 2 touchdowns to win it 29-19. Looking forward to regional play opening next week.
  • We had an "unreal" game as well. We played at one of the local catholic schools for our preseason game. They've got money so they have field turf, a video screen on their scoreboard and a rubber track. The turf was nice to play on but gave you rug burn when you slid and the little black rubber pelets that substitute as dirt get in your shoes.

    On to the game.....
We watched film on them from their Spring Game a couple of days before we played them and they looked pretty bad. We get to the field, start going through warmups, and see A LOT of unfamiliar player on their team. We got caught off guard by some of these "new" faces the first few possessions and put our offense into a hole and ended the first quarter down 14-0. After their first two offensive possesions, we played them evenly but still ended up losing 28-13. Because of TS Fay, we had only had 5 days of practice, in pads, before the game so penalties and a lot of silly errors occured.

Here's where it gets "unreal". After the game a friend of mine came over to me to talk before I had to get on the bus. He's friends with a WR on the other team and supposedly the unfamiliar faces we saw on the other team had all come over from various public schools during the past summer. The starting quarterback's father is one of the largest car dealers on the Space Coast and apparently funded the $10,000 tuition (each) for 8 new players to join the team this fall. One of those new players is their starting runnning back that ran for 2 TDs on us.......

Bitter? Not really, but it's just annoying what private schools and money can do.

As for me, I started but alternated every few possesions with my backup. I ended up with 3 solo tackles, with one being a loss of 3 yards on a screen pass, as well as a few assisted tackles. Had one pass completed on me but it was a 6 yard curl and I immediately tackled him.

Now we get into a tough part of our schedule where we play a lot of schools that are a lot bigger than us before moving on to district play. Our school has 1,150 kids TOTAL while our next couple of opponents have about 2,500 each.......should be funimage
  • We played defending District champions and one of the top teams in class 5a (we're 3a) last night........I won't give the score but here's the headline from the paper:

"Melbourne knocks Satellite out of orbit" image

I had 2 solo tackles and a few assists. They mainly ran the ball right up the gut since we were so overmatched at the line.

nice to see you guys playing up in talent, that's how you get better, the score probably reflect the difference in class and school size
    i'll guess 55-7???? close???

That score is about right. I'm still not going to give the exact score though image

Here are pics from the newspaper's online gallery. I didn't make any this week.

  • Another great showing by the home team and we're 2-1 on the season. Keep in mind that they didn't win a game last year. Had the potential to get testy but the officials did a decent job of keeping the players in check. Either way it's always fun watching your team jump out to a 20-0 lead in the first 6:00 of the game. The schedule every year has a way of having a quirk or two and we're now in the scheduling quirk. We won't play at home again for over a month.
