1981 Topps Joe Montana BGS 10 ... $26,100.00 And Reserve Still Not Met! ... High Bid of $47,685.00,

Up for auction is a 1981 Topps Joe Montana BGS 10 with a current bid of $26,100.00 ... AND THE RESERVE ISN'T MET. Of course I could be wrong, but generally, a seller won't get more for a card than its "first time out", e.g., I would take that $26,100.00 and RUN! Any guesses as to the final bid price.

/s/ JackWESQ

P.S. Not that big of a deal, but $75.00 for local pickup?

Thats insane. 1/4,488 graded a BGS 10 is impressive. I rather have this PSA 10 63/9,294 for about 23,000+ cheaper personally. Thats comparing the two prices with reserve not met.

How does an o/c back get a BGS 10.
  • that BGS 10 took some steroids, its just a little too big. 26K for a card that was just cut from a sheet? imageimageimageimageimageimageimageimage

I noticed that as well. No wonder the centering is so good. Look at the top borders of the 2 cards. About the same. Now, look at the bottom borders. The card on the left has much more of a bottom border.

    Still a nice card, though.

Another card that does not meet my criteria on what a 10 should be.

As noted the reverse is OC.

Back in the day i'd call that card near mint.

Mint would be 50/50 centering on the front

the reverse could be slighty off

Gem cards had to be all there with centering, coloring, gloss, corners, etc.

    Good for you.

I would have taken 20k and ran.

  • Steve,

I mean this in a sincere way, not being a smarty pants, but do you have an example you can show us that you consider a true gem mint card? I am just curious what eye appeal it takes to meet your standards.

Edited to say I agree with being more than thrilled to receive $20,000 for that card. I would not be too greedy on that one. image

Nice eyes on it possibly being sheet cut. I agree it is oddly longer than the PSA graded one.

  • With that seller(Ryan), that card being operated on is not out of the question in my mind. Let's just say he and I went back and forth last summer on a card. It eventually involved the police, but he had to come through in the end. I did eventually receive what I paid for, but not without a crock of bull. I just don't trust him, I'll put it that way.

First off, that's completely insane. I'm not one to trash what other people collect, but to dump that kind of money into that card is just not smart.

<< <i>P.S. Not that big of a deal, but $75.00 for local pickup? >>

Heck yeah it's a big deal. There should be NO charge to pick the card up in person.

    sweet price...i'd say over 30k.

i've purchased and returned searched 86 fleer bkb packs from this seller...

i hear of the 'sheet cut' cards all the time on the boards. where is the supply of the vintage uncut sheets?

    Thanks,

So the auction ended tonight with a high bid of $47,685.00. Unbelievable. Of course I could be wrong, but mark this price down as I don't think the seller will ever get more than the ~$48,000.00 for this card. But if he sells it privately, then I guess we'll never know. Still, my jaw just hit the ground at that price.

  • He'll regret being that greedy and stupid. The first time it goes up for sale is usually your best shot to max out on this type of stuff. The 2001 Bowman Chrome Pujols AU BGS 10 sold for a tad over $30,000 the first time it was listed, but the buyer allegedly backed out. Next time it went up it sold for $15,500 in a confirmed sale. Strike while the iron is hot..

I agree. I still cannot believe it went that high to begin with....crazy!

Extremely common card in high grade of a has been (yet great QB) who is NOT ever going to be in the spotlight again.

Stupid $$ for a card worth a couple hundred at best.

They could have bought a game used Montana uniform/helmet and hundreds of MINT rookies for that $$, and still have $$ left over for a nice car or trip to Sonoma County to see him in person at his favorite wine bar in Wikiup (north of Santa Rosa).

I think it's safe to say that something doesn't smell right about this. A 1955 topps Jackie Robinson PSA 10 sold sometime last year for around the same price. Hmmmm, which would you rather have?
  • jamesryanbelljamesryanbell Posts: 1,115 ✭✭✭
Based on his description and comparison to the Jordan rookie BGS 10, I seriously believe the guy was expecting a bid of $160,000 - $200,000 for it.

Breaking it down...................The card is worth $200, the slab is worth $30K+ (to an idiot)

"Buy the card not the plastic"
  • Isn't the card worth more than $200? PSA 10's are selling for $3000+.

    Reserve not met?

I don't know who's more nuts - the guy who'll bid 47K or the guy who won't take it!

    no kidding.

a psa 10 will go for 3k all day long, i had no idea what a bgs 10 would have gone for, but 47k was not even close to it.

    stupd money

Look at that Montana and picture the reverse centered and that is what I feel a gem mint card should be.

I would even accept what would amount to be 48/52 centering. If I can notice it, it isn't gem.

wow 47k and still reserve not met?

    Steve
    Good for you.

I know we often say, "everybody's different... shouldn't crack on someone for what they like... some people have a lot more money to spend...."

Bottom line: this is just an absurd way to throw away money. Just silly. No matter how wealthy one might be. That is just STUPID. I'll take my PSA 8 Montana every day of the week over that... oh ya, and my car I was able to pay cash for because I didn't buy the 10! image

this is where the mindset of the BGS genre does not know PSA exists...there are some of those out there, believe it or not.

Very true, and vice versa as well.
  • This is where the mindset of people willing to pay absurd prices for cards that are not truly that scarce takes over. Be it a BGS 10, a GAI 10, or a PSA 10, a card from 1981 is just not that scarce, even in Gem Mint condition.

I haven't looked in a while, but I seem to recall that there are 60+ PSA 10 Montana RC's.

    I've gotta add - I'm a bit envious - wish I had 47K to play with.

I would do some major damage to my T3 set!
