Some of us are photocentric, we like to see images...

He means the South African Republic ("ZAR" = Zuid-Afrikaanse Republiek), for the majority of folks out there who have no clue what he is talking about.

Also, a "pond" is their spelling of "pound", and it IS a coin, not just a murky body of water with frogs in it. image

Some of those "ponds" are pretty tough coins, I think.

PS- he might be a bit vague with his descriptions and foreign abbreviations and short on pictures at the moment, but I have done business with him and he sells NICE stuff, if you like Darkside. image

"ZAR ponds" does sound a bit like Monty Python's "Crunchy Frog", dunnit? image

Marcel, if you put pictures with your listing, folks might not suspect as much that you are selling extraterrestrial candy or something alien and bizarre! image

Thanks for the assistance, but I know he means Zuid Afrikanische Republik, I just like to see images of coins. I am not a sight unseen type of gold buyer. I used to own one of the 1898 Ponds, but I sold it years ago to finance an overseas trip. I sure would like to find another choice example of one of these.

My explanation was not aimed at you, SaorAlba- I know YOU knew what they were. I was just picturing all the poor Litesiders out there, scratching their heads and trying to figure out what in the heck a "ZAR pond" was. image

I have never owned one- all of my South African stuff (with the exception of one ZAR sixpence and a newp satirically-engraved 2-shilling from last week) has been under British rule. From what I understand, some of these ponds are tough coins, like I said. Certainly not something one sees every day.

They are really cool historical pieces, coupled with the fact that they had Paul Kruger on them, then president of the ZAR and much later on the Krugerrand in the 1960's on up. I was looking Krugerrands up the other day and saw they are still cranking them out, in smaller numbers than before, but I am surprised they are still being released in post apartheid South Africa.

This is not a "pond", but it is ZAR. Just swapped it away tonight. It was one of those unusual things I can't resist for a few dollars.

Note Oom Paul Kruger's meerschaum pipe, top hat, and new coat that somebody thought to give him. image
